Signing Up for Parental Controls

Overview

You may feel frustrated with how your child is using the laptop.  Perhaps you are unsure of what they are using it for or why they appear to be using it for extended periods of time.

The Mac has a Parental Controls feature built into the operating system that may help give some control over how the machine is used.

In general, Parental Controls is not a super effective system, with the exception of one feature: forcing the machine to shut down at certain times.  This is a great way to ensure your child is not using the machine at odd times during the evening.

Getting Setup

We are happy to assist parents with setting up parental controls.  There are a few steps involved and are detailed below.

  1. Create a unique username and password. We need to create an additional account for the Mac just for you as a parent. This new account requires a username and password that your child will not be able to guess.  Otherwise, they might go in and turn it off.
  2. Send the username and password to Michaelb@isb.ac.th (that’s me) and I will forward it to our EdTech department
  3. Direct your child to go to the EdTech department and ask them to “create a parent account”
  4. Set up the parental controls as you like. Resources below.
