The Buzz Around AI at ISB

ISB is a microsome of the world. Often we see things that are big talk or newsmakers float around ISB as well.  With all of the recent information about Artificial Intelligence tools like ChatGPT and others, there is a lot of discussion and usage in education.  If you haven’t tried any of these tools yet, take a few moments to see what it can do and how impressive it is as a new technology.

How are we seeing it being used at ISB?  Obviously, writing has been a very big place where we have seen the implementation.  Like many other educational institutions, we were worried about students potentially making poor decisions with such a powerful tool.  That said, the ISB Staff and admin quickly respond to emerging technologies.  In this case, we did some early testing, we had some interactions in classes, and the admin met with teachers.  We then did a full faculty discussion in the high school about the topic of plagiarism and how we can be proactive.

One thing we considered was how can we leverage this tool for use with students. In that respect it has now been applied to develop questions, to get contextual ideas, and basic structures.  We do feel that it is only the tip of the iceberg and more uses will definitely come in the future.  It feels very good to know that the high school teachers and administration are actively embracing new technologies and on the hunt for ways they can help students embrace these technologies.

One to explore as a plagiarism tool is Originality.ai.  They have been most successful in their efforts to develop a tool for evaluating the misuse of Chat style AI Writers.  Take a look at their tests below. If you haven’t seen it yet go take a look.

Bell’s Recommendation

Camp Zero by Michelle Min Sterling

In the near future, resources are tighter and people are struggling to survive. At that same time a new piece of technology, the Flick a device that allows you to connect, search and scroll through information with a click behind your ear. It is implanted in people from birth. While people are more connected electronically they are becoming more disconnected. At the same time, the far north is becoming a place refugees are streaming from America due to global climate change. The story is then set in a dystopic ‘wild west’ where all kinds of different individuals are forced together. This is definitely and adult book with adult themes and language so be careful.

Has Google finally found a social networking winner in Google Earth? - GeoawesomenessGoogle Earth

Traveling over Songkran break made me wonder about history. I found myself asking the question, ‘What did this place look like 200 years ago?’ It is one of those ideas that focus on our changing planet. It was a good reminder that we need to think about how we are changing this planet. So, I went looking for something that might show some time-lapse of the planet. Check out Timelapse in Google Earth. Google Earth isn’t a new one, but it is a good one. Timelapse is very cool. However, you can also take voyages and various global experiences. In the Main Library, we are setting up a VR Station where you can come and does this virtually. It is a special setup as the Quests cannot do this unless tethered to a computer due to the computing load, but it is totally worth it!
