Excitement About Reading

As we suffer through this third wave of COVID here in Thailand, it gets tougher to find those things to celebrate at school. Seniors feel the loss of the end of their senior year, and other students are struggling to stay motivated online.  However, a bright spot is that during this time it seems that many of our MS and HS students have decided to pull themselves away from whatever hot show is being binged watched by everyone and are doing some reading.

Here in the Main Library, we have been happy to receive requests for books. In the short time we’ve been in this recent bout of virtual school we have seen nearly 70 students and well over 150 titles have gone out. This is a great sign and we are happy to offer that service to anyone in the ISB Community (parents, that means you too can order books!).  Form to Request Books or Sora (Audio/eBooks) – We are happy to receive your book requests, and you can drop off books for the library in front of the Chevron on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am – 2pm.

Steps to Request a Book:

  1. Look up the title or author, or just browse the collection
  2. Confirm that the book is available (it will have a little red triangel in the upper lefthand corner that says ‘OUT’ if it is unavailable).
  3. Complete the Form to Request Books or Sora (Audio/eBooks)
  4. Wait for your confirmation from the Main Library Staff.
  5. Collect your books and enjoy!

Bell’s Recommendation:

Different Seasons – by Stephen King

Most people have seen or heard of The Shawshank Redemption. Many of the seniors just finished this title. The movie is currently trending on Netflix. It is an award-winning movie. That being said the story is one of four amazing novellas in Stephen King’s Different Seasons. There are four titles in this book Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, Apt Pupil, The Body, and The Breathing Method. If you’ve never read Stephen King because so many of his titles are just huge endeavors I highly recommend this title. They all have King’s mysterious, real, and at times terrifying style of writing. This is an easy read that gives you a taste of this iconic writer’s works. I love every one of these stories. Shawshank is a favorite but Apt Pupil is another twisted story about a boy whose mentor turns out to be quite an evil person. Stephen King isn’t for everyone as he often has adult themes, language, and violence, but I think he is worth the exploration.

Melinda’s Recommendation:

Outlawed – by Anna North (Adult, Adventure)

As if being barren when all you want is to have a child of your own isn’t bad enough – women who can’t bear a child after being married for one to two years are banished or burned as witches.  The year is 1894, Anna is 17 and hopeful as she begins her new married life.  Her mother is a master midwife and Ada is an excellent apprentice, through this work she knows that there are many suspicious beliefs around barrenness, which are harmful and based on fear and the need to blame rather than medical knowledge. After a year of marriage and no pregnancy, she is forced to leave for her own survival and joins the notorious Hole in the Wall Gang – a group of outlaws and robbers, presided over by The Kid.  However, Ada finds a new life and is able to continue down a different yet important path.
