News from HS Counselors

This week the counseling team did advisory lessons, “Tech and You,” for the grade 9 cohort. In this lesson, we shared the history of smartphones, the pros and cons of technology, how technology affects our behavior, and engaging in a “Flow State” activity. We encouraged the students to immerse themselves in a non-technological activity that is neither hard nor easy and meaningful. A “Flow State” activity can be reading, exercising, playing an instrument, working on a puzzle, or mentally stimulating activity. We hope students will learn to do more meaningful activities besides using their mobile phone

As mentioned in the last eNews, the schedule change deadline has passed. However, here are the exceptions:

Schedule changes for the remainder of this semester can only be made for the following reasons and by the following dates:

  1. If a teacher recommends a level change due to misplacement (i.e., Extended Math to Core Math, Spanish III to Spanish II), a change can be made with a parent, counselor and administrative approval. The original class will not appear on the transcript. The deadline is Friday, February 10.
  2. Between the 6th and 10th week of a course, if a student needs to move down a level, the dropped course will be listed on the transcript with a WP (Withdraw Pass) or WF (Withdraw Fail). The WP or WF grade is not included in the calculation of GPA, nor is credit granted. Your grade in the new course will only include work completed in the new course. The deadline is Friday, March 17.

Please have your student speak with their counselor (Ms. Leoni, Mr. Sambula Jr., or Ms.

Valenzuela) if they need to make a schedule change for any of the above reasons.
