A look at Standards Based Grading
by Dennis Harter

Last week, MS admin presented at the PTA meeting on Standards Based Reporting. Each year, we do this presentation to help parents understand how we provide feedback to students and why ISB and so many other schools have shifted away from traditional grading and reporting practices.

I am in the process now of developing a short summary video of our presentation for those who could not attend. Please stay tuned in the eNews for that video to be shared.

MS Showing our Panther Spirit Next Week

by Dennis Harter
dennish@isb.ac.th

At ISB we always try to build a community of learning and connection. We know that students learn best when they like to come to school, feel part of a larger whole, and connect with the people around them. Not surprisingly, school spirit is a big part of this equation and it’s one of the reasons schools seize opportunities to foster pride and community as they arise.

This coming week is one of those times. With ISB hosting the IASAS Basketball Championships, we have a great opportunity to bring our community together, connect our student body, and further the pride our students share for our school. As a Middle School we are using this event (and the lead up to it) as part of our look at how we care for our community through spectatorship, as well as a look at the hidden circles around us, kindness, and saving memories through “time capsules.”

This will culminate in the games on Thursday and Friday of this coming week. Each day at 7:40 in Rajendra Hall, the entire middle school will be there to cheer on the ISB Panthers. We’ve even got an MS pep band! The gym promises to be a rocking arena on Thursday and Friday morning. Go Panthers!

Repeat Annoucement: Raising Multilinguals Parent Workshop: Unlocking the World with a Family Language Plan

On February 1, 2018, from 7:45 to 9:15 a.m. in MPB 1 at the top of the Zigzag, ISB EAL and Native Language faculty will offer a workshop for parents from all divisions (ES, MS, HS) about maintaining students’ native languages while they also study in English at ISB. This will be an extended version of the Raising Multilinguals workshop offered in the ES in past years.

At this workshop faculty will:

  • Present reasons to maintain native language, based on research
  • Describe native language classes and resources available at ISB
  • Discuss the importance of making a family language plan

Faculty will also lead small group discussions of how to nurture particular languages, how to support native language development at home, and how to make a language plan work.

Please join us! Parents of students in PreK through Grade 12 are welcome. For further information, please write to nativelanguage@isb.ac.th.
