Amazing Frog and Toad!

Frog and Toad 3
The performance of Frog and Toad delighted audiences on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Fourth and fifth graders used Arnold Lobel’s story to teach us about overcoming obstacles, perseverance, and the power of friendship.  We are so grateful for everyone that made this wonderful learning opportunity happen.  It is sure to be one that our audiences and cast members will remember.
To see photos of the show please click here the album will be updated throughout the weekend.

Student Led Conferences – March 9, 10

We are looking forward to seeing you at our Student Led Conferences. You can access your child’s individual letter containing additional details in PowerSchool here (click “Parent Conference” on the left hand side).  A link and information regarding  Pick-A-Time, the online scheduling site, can be found at the end of your child’s letter.  Scheduling for the conferences will open Monday, February 27 at 8:00 AM and close Monday, March 6 at 2:00 PM.

Here are some things to consider as we approach the conferences:

Before the conference:

  • Be prepared to talk to your child about his/her strengths and areas for growth
  • Understand this is the time for your child to take the lead and demonstrate their learning

During the conference:

  • Use the language with which you are most comfortable
  • Be an active listener
  • Be present (no mobile telephones, emails, texts)
  • Avoid critiquing/ focus on the successes and new learning
  • Ask questions of your child using stems such as “What did you learn from….?”, or “Why did you do it this way…?” or “How was the learning challenging for you…?”
  • Be mindful that what might seem small to you, might be a huge accomplishment for your child
  • If your child seems nervous or shy, give them time and/or ask guiding questions about they work they are showing you
  • If you want to take photos, please wait until the end of the conference

After the conference:

  • Talk with your child about the conference and develop a plan to implement any strategies that were discussed during the conference
  • Remember to periodically check-in with your child regarding progress toward his/her goals

ES Parent Education workshop – Thursday March 2, 2017 at 7:45 am in the ES MPR, “Coding and Visual Literacy: Take A Walk in the Shoes of an ES Student!”

As we know, the world continues to change and evolve.  However, today we are seeing it change at an even faster rate than before. The pace of change seems to be on a continuous acceleration curve for at least the near future.

Some of these changes include how we communicate our thoughts, ideas and stories. In the ES we are focusing on two of the many changes: Learning how to bring the power of the visual to our communication and the power of coding to develop, build and share new projects.

This hands on workshop is designed to show parents the tools and resources we use to improve the visual communication and coding skills of our students.

Warning Online Activity with Elementary School Children

As a part of our on-going counseling program in the elementary school, we educate students on the potential dangers of engaging with others online.  We teach students to always ask parents before giving out any personal information, as well as the possible safety issues of playing online games with strangers.  Recently, we have learned about an online game called “Roblox.” This game targets very young children, and there have been several warnings issued from parents around the globe with concerns.  The warnings have centered around encouraging children to give personal information as well as interacting inappropriately with other strangers online who are also playing the game. Please educate yourself about this game and others, as young children should never interact with strangers online or give any personal information.  If you have any questions about this, please contact one of our counselors.
