Hello Families,

We hope you had a restful break. Mr. Hagen and his family visited Koh Lipe.  It was magical.  We have enjoyed hearing about your travels and adventures from the class.

Science Experiments

Students are starting new evaporation experiments tomorrow.  Our next experiment will focus on the size and shape of containers.  Students have decided to bring containers from home. Please remind your child about this tonight.  The more obscure the shape of the container, the better.  If you find something, please send it to school with your child tomorrow.  He/she may have already picked containers at school, but Mr. Hagen will try his best to convince.

COVID

Thank you for all of your support around safety measures.  More and more classes are closing and the numbers are increasing in Thailand.  Kids in our class are consistently wearing masks without reminders.  Please ensure that your child’s mask covers his/her nose and that it’s easy for the mask to remain in place for the whole day.  If our class needs to move to virtual learning, information will be shared through this website and the email addresses we have.

Persuasive Writing

We have kicked off our study of persuasive writing.  All of the chairs in our classroom went on strike Tuesday morning.  Our class wrote persuasive letters and we convinced them to let us use them again!   This unit of study will be most students’ first exposure to highly structured writing.  We will be learning about structure and organization.  For some students this is very challenging.  The length of our persuasive pieces will be much shorter than the books we have been writing thus far.  Have a look at an annotated mentor text to get a feel for what students will be expected to compose independently in 4 weeks.  Students will be using resources to support them when writing persuasively.  Have a peek at a “language frame” resource students will use when writing.  Support your child at home by discussing their ideas and giving kids opportunities to “convince” us.  Remember that if a writer cannot say it, a writer cannot write it.
