Hello Parents,

There is no virtual school on Thursday or Friday this week.

Schedule For This Week

Schedule has also been shared with students via seesaw.  Virtual School Schedule Week of September 13th

Writing

Mr. Hagen will begin using morning meeting time to instruct the class in writing.  It’s important that students arrive on time and are prepared with whiteboards, markers, notebooks, pencils, etc.   This week, your child is going to choose a topic and begin the writing process.  Students may create fiction or nonfiction books.  On Monday, students will create a “plan-book.”  This is a model of the book he/she will write.  There are examples of what a nonfiction and a fiction plan-book look like in the seesaw activity on Monday.  Students will be using the book creator app to create these plans.  Reinforce the choices for your child.  He/she can write using the stylus, type in text boxes, or write on his/her whiteboard and then take a photo.  Kids will often try to write their entire story in these books…help your child internalize the difference between a plan and the actual book.  On Tuesday, students will be asked to add a few more words to each page and then rehearse their book.  Students will add an audio recording to each page of his/her plan.  There are 2 seesaw activities on Tuesday.  One for fiction and one for nonfiction.  There are examples students can watch in each activity.  Encourage your child to watch the 2 minute examples.  Everything Mr. Hagen is sharing now will be shared during the writing lesson on Monday and Tuesday Morning.   Detailed planning is a new concept for most kids in grade 2.  The connection between the spoken and written word is powerful and Mr. Hagen believes firmly that if one cannot say something, one cannot write it.  Oral rehearsal is an essential part of writing and language development.  Encourage your child to rehearse his/her story many times and provide praise and support.
