Telling Time

Dear Families,

We look forward to one last week of learning before the long holiday! Please let us know if you are leaving early for holidays, or will return late, so we know for attendance purposes.

We have been learning how to tell time on an analog and digital clock. The second graders have varying experience with this important skill. This is a math skill you can support at home by:

  • Posting a large analog clock in your kitchen or dining area. Throughout the evening, refer to the time. Breakfast, dinner and bedtimes are great chances to talk about the clock and time.
  •  If you celebrate Christmas, consider buying your child a cheap watch with an analog face, to support them telling time.
  • Talk about time…..what time you will go to the party, what time soccer practice happens, what time we go to bed. The more conversations you have about time, and refer to clocks in your home, will support making this abstract concept make sense to your child.

This week we will be busy reflecting on our partner conversations in reading, and publishing our realistic fiction stories in writing! We also had a fun Virtual Reality experience, using Google Cardboard, to visit some urban communities around the world as part of our unit on Global Communities. Ask your child if they can explain what an urban community is!

As always, keep your child home if they have a fever or are sick. We want everyone to head off to their holidays feeling well and healthy!
