Dear Families,
We hope you had a restful October break. We hit the ground running on Monday and jumped right into our Character unit in reading. Readers can think about the characters in their books-how they feel, what they want, how they act and what lessons they might learn. Thinking about characters in the books we read helps us better understand our books. You can support your child by asking them to tell you about the characters in their books.
In writing, we began a new unit on persuasive writing. Our learners have chosen topics they feel passionate about, they have learned to write opinions, and this week they learned the parts of a persuasive writing piece. You can support this work by asking your child to share their opinions with you, and asking them to give reasons and explanations to support their answer.
In math, we are in the middle of a unit on place value. We are breaking numbers up into their expanded form, writing their number form, and learning word form. One quick reminder-please note that our home learning expectation for math is that each child does dreambox for at least 20 minutes a week. We have noticed many students are not completing this work, and we need them all to do this important practice.
In science, we are wrapping up our unit on Air and Weather. Next week we will launch our kite maker challenge. Students will learn how to make basic kites (some of them have already done this) and will design a better kite. Know that mid-week your child may ask to bring in a few supplies from home to make their new kite.
