Thank you to all the parents who came to our Open House on Thursday. We thoroughly enjoyed speaking with you, and getting to know some of you better. In the next few weeks, please feel free to email us with any questions. One follow up thought-please note that both Ms. Eide and Mr. Hagen are passionate about and teach all subjects (Ms. Eide is not the literacy teacher and Mr. Hagen is not the math teacher.) We wanted to model for you the movement in the room, and how we organize groups. Here is the slideshow from the night.
A few things to note……next week we begin our home learning routine. Each day, your child will bring home a book to read. This is a book of choice, from their book box. Know that we spend a lot of time working with your child to find books that are a good fit for them, however we do not send home leveled readers. We believe that kids should read books that they enjoy, and ones where they can read most of the words and have a good understanding of the book. We will share more detailed and specific information about your child as a reader at the October conference. Also, remember that your child should do 10 minutes of Dreambox two times a week.
We are well into our routines across all subject areas, and have been enjoying getting to know your kids academically both through formal assessments and through informal chats. In writing, students have learning about our writing workshop routines. They have been learning many strategies to elaborate and write more by adding dialogue, action and setting details. In reading, they have been reviewing workshop routines such as how to stay focused on their book when reading independently, how to choose books, and that readers stop and think when reading. In math, they have been busy learning games and routines that they will continue with throughout the year to practice addition and subtraction. In social studies, we have been learning how to be good friends to our classmates.
Take care and enjoy your weekend!
