Persuasive Writing

Dear Families,

We have been very busy since returning from October break. We loved hearing all the kids’ stories, and hope you enjoyed your time together!

This week we launched many new units. In Reading, we have begun a unit on Characters and their stories. We have been paying attention to how characters in books feel, what they say and we’ve been imagining what they may be thinking. You can support this work at home by asking your child to tell you about the characters in the books they are reading.

In writing, we have begun a unit on persuasive writing. Students began the unit by watching three short animated clips, choosing their favorite, and writing a short review on their chosen movie. You can help your child with this new form of writing, by asking them to state their opinion on anything and asking them to give you 3 reasons to support their opinion. For example, if you go to a new restaurant, you can ask them if they liked it and to give three reasons to support their opinion. Today they finished their first piece. Ask them what they wrote about!

In math, we continue our work on place value. Today or yesterday, your child brought home a practice packet to show you some of the work we’ve been doing in small groups. Some finished, some did not. Next week we will continue building, naming and understanding larger numbers.

Enjoy your weekend!
