Home Reading
We have started sending books home each night in take home folders. The books your child brings home are books he/she has chosen. Students “shop” for books each Monday morning. We ask that students choose books they are interested in and like. We have had some lessons about how to know if a book is “just right.” To help students select the most appropriate books, we have color coded many of the books in our classroom collection. We have shared 2-3 colors with your child. He or she should know which color is challenging and which colors are more aligned with where they are as readers. Kids should spend most of their time reading books they can easily read and comprehend. Ask your child about the colors and take notice of what he/she brings home each night. Some adult support may be needed if the book your child brings home is consistently a book that is challenging. We encourage kids to take home a variety of books for practice. Please let us know if you’re concerned about home reading.
What have we been learning in writing?
Writers add setting details using the 5 senses.
2nd graders are now writing personal narratives independently.
Writers use simple sketching strategies to help tell stories.
Sound words are a way to add action to our stories.
Writers share how characters feel. We have learned about intensity of feelings and which emotions fit into which situations.
