Peace was the theme this week. On Monday, our class started our work on our peace globes. On Wednesday, we wrote our messages of peace for the world on fabric scraps and wove them into ISB’s peace shelter at the front of school. We had one minute of peaceful silence and did some peaceful breathing as well while in the shelter. On Thursday, our class read the book, What Does Peace Feel Like? and then we wrote our own 5 sense peace poems. Look for these on seesaw. On Friday, our class attended ISB’s Building Blocks for Peace Assembly.
Next week, Second Grade Guidance Lesson #2 will focus on teaching students about the concept of empathy. Students will learn that empathy is feeling or understanding what someone else is feeling. Clues in faces, bodies and situations help you notice and understand how people are feeling. Our second graders will also learn that people can have different feelings about the same situation, and that people’s feelings can change. Lastly, they will learn that ALL feelings are OK and that some feelings are more comfortable than others. Helping children develop empathy and perspective taking are key prerequisites for compassion, conflict resolution, and success with peers.
