MARKET DAY
We have begun our final social studies unit on Resources and Economics. We will be learning about goods and services, needs vs. wants as well as supply and demand. As part of our unit, students will be creating their own class business either individually or with a partner. Students will plan their business, advertise and work on getting their business ready over the next four weeks. For the final part of our unit all the second grade students in each class will set up their businesses for Market Day, and invite the First Grade classes and parents to come buy from them. The second grade teachers will provide fake money for all the guests.
Part of our unit will involve students earning money each day for coming to “work”, for good behavior, and quality home and class work. This way, they can be earning and saving money to develop their business and to go shopping on Market Day. Ask you child about how much money they earn each day. Making positive choices and being responsible are major factors contributing to income level.
As your child comes home with ideas for his or her business, some will want you to buy prizes or items for their shop. Please be aware that teachers are not requiring student businesses to involve parents spending money. There are plenty of things the students can do that do not require money. Some examples are making cards, bookmarks, providing a service or even selling old toys. However, if you would like to help them buy prizes or make food for their business, please feel free to do so.
Our date for the actual Market Day is Tuesday, June 3rd in the morning. We will send out more detailed information, as we get closer to that date. Parents are welcome to attend.
Swimming
Mr. Magsi’s and Mr. Hossack’s students will be starting their swimming unit on Wednesday, May 14th, during their PE lessons. This is a great opportunity for students to improve their swimming and water safety skills, while having a safe and enjoyable experience. Please read the following guidelines below so as to make sure you are ready to begin the swimming program:
BATHING SUITS:
Girls should wear a one-piece bathing suit. Boys may wear Speedos, trunks or knee length Lycra suits; however, they should not wear bathing suits that are below their knees. Please make sure the condition of your suit is suitable. T-Shirts are not allowed. To ensure that the children do not forget their bathing suits, all students can leave their suits hanging in a designated place at the pool. When they arrive for their next lesson, the suits will be there, dry and waiting for them. Please write your name clearly on your bathing suit.
GOGGLES & CAPS:
Some students prefer to swim with goggles and some not. You can make do with basic, inexpensive goggles that are comfortable. Swimming Caps should be worn by all students with long hair as it makes swimming comfortable and is much more practical. At the very least, long hair should be tied back. Again, the students will leave their goggles here at the pool until the swimming unit is complete. Please clearly write your name on the cap and goggles.
TOWELS:
We are very fortunate on having clean towels for all our students. Students do not need to bring their towels. Towels are provided!
SICKNESS:
It is our policy in the PE department that if a child is attending school, then they must participate in physical activity. If you are well enough to be at school, then you are expected to participate in swimming.
This is a great opportunity for your child to receive professional and high quality instruction from a qualified and experienced aquatic staff, who will endeavor to provide a safe and friendly learning environment. Swimming is a life skill!!
For inquiries regarding this unit, feel free to contact the Aquatic Staff, George Carpouzis/Sandy Elder, or your PE Teacher.

Summer Reading
Reading books over the summer that are fun and engaging is important. Here are some helpful lists. Reading novels aloud to your children is something Mr. Hagen recommends and often provides a gateway to teach your children your values and also a natural way to discuss social issues. Here are some links to great lists:
Top 100 picture books
Top 100 children’s novels
Wordless picture books– our class has really enjoyed these this year. They are great for discussion and higher level thinking
