What does it mean when young readers are asked to make sticky notes in their novels?
Reading is not just decoding the words in a book; reading is thinking. Recording this thinking allows teachers to mentor students in their thinking and also for students to recall and monitor the “inner conversations” they have with texts while they read. We are currently studying historical fiction and students are organized into book clubs. Students use their sticky notes as the focal points of their discussions each day. Using these 8 thinking strategies greatly enhances their comprehension and ability to discuss a text. This is what students have been practicing at school. This will sometimes be assigned for homework.
