"The background of my artwork consists of bright-colored rectangles, squares, and triangles. The ‘wall’ that the people are sitting on is made out of brick; I exaggerated the height of this wall to make it look like it wouldn’t end. The mood I chose for this piece was depression; I made all the other people vibrant and colorful, positioning them in small groups. But, there was one person who was not involved in any conversation, he was just sitting alone with a cloud over his head. The bricks that he was sitting on were all cracked and old; this symbolizes isolation, depression and low self-esteem. I created my art by first looking at the different types of background in Alice in Wonderland, then I painted my background using cool colors and shapes as patterns. It didn’t take a long time for me to finish my background, but the process for the collaged people took very long. I had to draw, cut, paint, then collage them. I got the inspiration from students at our school, several students had a hard time making friends or communicating with people. These students tend to have social issues, which almost always leads to depression. Although lots of people may not notice, I wanted to try to express their emotions around large groups. This piece may also talk a lot about inclusion since the grey person in this piece looks like he wants to be included, but doesn’t know how. While creating my artwork I learned how to play with scale and how mix colors better. My artwork was even better than I had imagined because while creating my thumbnails I didn’t expect the people to look so impressive! I think this painting might influence my future artworks to always have a story or emotion behind it. "
