Our Grade 3 – 5 students are enrolled in Typing PAL Online. We’re using it as a home learning task rather than a specific time task in the classroom.
Typing Pal Online is a 100% web-based keyboarding tutor tailored to students and teachers needs. All Grade 3, 4 & 5 classes are set up and students are registered. You can use Typing Pal online whenever you are ready to. As this typing practice is online, students can complete their typing courses at home. The advantage of using Typing Pal is that you can track your progress. It’s very easy to use and the teachers can adjust the program to meet the needs of their students.

Today Grade 3 is learning how to create a post on their own blog.
1. I play the bagpipes.
2. I collect seahorses (things that have seahorses on them).
3. I have been to the Great Wall of China.
4. I can scuba dive. I am an open water diver.

We thought that a post called 3 Truths and A Lie would be a good idea so that we could practise creating a post and we could also practise our commenting by going to other blogs in our class and trying to guess the lie.

The “front-end” of your blog is what everyone (the public) looking at your blog sees, and the “back-end” is where you do all the work on your blog. Nobody but you sees the “back-end” of your blog and you have to log into the “back-end” of your blog to work on it.
Here’s the step by step instructions we will follow as a class to get started with the technical side of blogging on our own individual blog.
- Go to the Class Blog
- Click on tab Student Blogs
- Click on your name to go to the “front-end” of your own blog
- Take a screenshot (command+shift+4) of your blog (so we can do a then and now comparison post later – love this idea Mr Jessee!!)
- Look for the “meta” widget and “log-in” (our default blog theme has this meta widget) Notice where this meta widget is
- Type in username and default-set-up-blog-password (this password will change)
- Dashboard discovery – we stop at this point and take a closer look at the dashboard – what do we recognise, what words do we notice, what’s our thinking about different sections
- Edit our profile account, change our nickname to the name we want to author our posts as, change our password to our own password. (Classroom teacher keeps a record of usernames and passwords for emergencies on google docs & shares with the Technology & Learning Coach)
- Follow instructions from TLC for allowing comments on our blog (Settings, Discussion)
- Practise logging in and out of the back-end of our blog (repeat this step several times)
Once we are satisfied that everyone can log into the “back-end” of their own blog successfully, right from opening Firefox, we will give you 10 minutes to explore the themes. You will learn how to
- Access themes
- Preview a theme
- Activate a chosen theme
- Install a meta widget (if your final theme choice does not have one)
For the last 10 minutes of today’s session we will watch Professor Garfield as he teaches us some things about Online Safety. Watch out for YAPPY – I’ll be asking you what it means after Professor Garfield has finished!
