IASAS Spirit

Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents,

We have enjoyed an exciting week so far with the hosting of IASAS Badminton and Golf here in Bangkok whilst our Baseball/softball teams are playing in Singapore and our Track and Field team are competing in Jakarta. We enjoyed a spirited start to proceedings here with some of our Elementary school students joining the opening ceremony and also joining in the crowds watching the badminton players.  There has been great energy and spirit in the Gyms at school cheering on our now famous Badminton players. Please do come and support them on Saturday as both Boys and girls teams are likely to feature in the playoff games.

Thank you again to all of our parents that are hosting players from our IASAS schools this week as well.

DELVE
Peter Assimakopoulos
petera@isb.ac.th

Dear All,

On Tuesday, March 28th, we held a parent meeting to share with parents the changes that will be made for DELVE for the coming school year. We would like to thank all the parents who attended the meeting.

During the meeting, we explained the reasons for the changes and announced  the new dates for DELVE, which take place during the week of November 20th – 24th for the 2023-2024 school year. If your child is going on an overnight trip, they may leave as early as the 18th or 19th of November and return by the 23rd of November (Thursday). This is particularly convenient for families who celebrate American Thanksgiving as they will be home in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

When selecting a DELVE, we recommend that you pay close attention to the departure and arrival times and choose the option that works best for your family.

DELVE is a mandatory course for all high school students as they gain experiences that cannot be replicated in the classroom and engage in practical hands-on experiences. We carefully considered the school calendar when deciding on the best time for all students to participate in DELVE. November had the least impact on all our learners.

Please find the presentation shared at the parent meeting here. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Peter Assimakopoulos (petera@isb.ac.th).

Regards,
Peter Assimakopoulos

News from University Counselors

Debbie McDowell
debbiem@isb.ac.th

The University Counselor office has been busy this week with university visits, Junior Seminar and travel!  Mr. Becker has been out of the office as he participates in visits to universities in Hong Kong. We look forward to his return and him sharing the details with the other university counselors. ISB university counselors hosted Dr. Joe Duffy from Manchester Metropolitan University on Friday. Dr. Duffy is the senior lecturer in the film department. He spoke with the IB Film and the Animation classes. It was a great opportunity for our students to hear from a professional in the field.

Senior Parent Meetings next week

Mark your calendars for the Senior Parent Transition meeting @ 9:00 AM in the MPB 3 next week on Tuesday, 4 April. Come join other senior parents in planning for your child’s departure to university.  Also, there will be a US Visa presentation @ 3:00 in MPB 1 on Tuesday, 4 April. If your child will need a visa to study in the US, this is a useful meeting to find out the details about how to apply for the F-1 student visa. Please join us.

Grade 10

Next week, 5 April, at 6:30 PM, the Grade 10 Family University Night will be held in the Chevron Theater. Please plan on joining the university counselors as they provide the general framework for the university research, selection and application process for parents and students.

Grade 11

Junior Seminar #8 was on Monday. The students submitted their first draft/planning document for university essays. Students will be submitting a draft of their university essay in April. Ask your child how their essay work is going! Additionally, students were instructed on how to request their teacher recommendations (2) for their university applications. They have until 7 April to speak with their teachers and until 20 April to submit their brag sheets to the teachers. This is another major step in getting prepared for submitting university applications in the first semester of their senior year. Finally, the counselors covered application nuts and bolts about applying to universities in the US, UK and Canada. The Thai university application process was covered in a previous session. If your child has questions about other regions of the world, please encourage them to meet individually with their counselor.

Upcoming University Visits:
Monday, 3 April, Loyola Marymount University, 11:00-11:40 @ HS Conference Room

Monday, 17 April, Boston University, 3:00-3:40 @ MPB 1

Thursday, 20 April, Vanderbilt University & University of Chicago, 3:00-3:40 @ HS Conference Room

Thursday, 18 May, Sogang University (Korea), 11:00-11:40 @ HS Conference Room

Please encourage your child to consistently check the Virtual and Off Campus University Events spreadsheet to know what’s available. Please note that pre-registration is needed for some events.

Please check the ISB University/College Counseling website for useful information. You will find university research tools, transition resources for students and parents, recordings and slide shows from Parent Coffees and family presentations, virtual and off campus university visits, information about testing and how to sign up for the SAT at ISB, a list of summer programs about which the counselors have been informed, and the ISB School Profile.

Kindly,
Debbie
