2) Video tutorial from ISB

A NOTE ABOUT MAP: All parents will find their child’s mathematics and reading test results for the September 2022 Measures of Academic Progress assessment (MAP) on PowerSchool.  Within this PDF you will find very detailed information regarding our MAP assessments and explanations of the scores from the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA).

Standardized tests like the MAP do not assess all of what it is that make each of our children special and unique. The people who create and score these tests do not know each child the way our ISB teachers do and certainly not the way you do. They do not know that your child fluently speaks two or more languages. They do not know that your child can play a musical instrument or that he/she can dance or paint. They do not know that your child writes poetry or songs, plays or participates in sports, wonders about the future, or that sometimes he/she takes care of a little brother or sister after school. They do not know that your child has traveled to fascinating places around the world or that he/she knows how to tell a great story or that he/she really loves spending time with special family members and friends. They do not know that your child acts with integrity and can be trustworthy, compassionate or thoughtful, and that he/she tries, every day, to his/her very best…the attached scores will tell you something, but do keep in mind that they will not tell you everything.

Conferences: October 6 & 7

We look forward to sharing your child’s learning progress with you as part of the upcoming October 6 & 7 conferences on campus!  Pick-A-Time, our conference scheduler, will open on Tuesday, September 27 at 8:00 AM and will close Monday, October 3 at 2:00 PM.   For the directions on how to use Pick-A-Time, log into PowerSchool and click on the “Parent Conference” icon.

As we purposefully calendar conferences well in advance, we ask all families to cooperate by attending conferences on these dates and avoid making any requests for a conference on an alternate date. Please contact ES Principal Michael Allen directly if you have a family emergency that conflicts with your scheduled appointment: MichaelA@isb.ac.th

From PK-Grade 5, the purposes for conferences are the following:

  • Communicate learning growth
  • Enhance home-school partnership
  • Provide ways to promote home learning
  • Build understanding around what learning looks like at ISB

In Grades 1-5, students are a very important part of the conferences and will also attend.  At ISB, we believe that children are in charge of their learning and we give them many opportunities to know that they are capable and that they can influence what happens to them. As we prepare for conferences, children work with teachers to assess their strengths and challenges, select work samples that illustrate their current levels of skill, ability and effort, and create an action plan for continued growth and improvement.  During conferences, teachers, students and parents discuss all aspects of the child’s learning together with openness and transparency so that students continue to feel empowered and responsible for their behavior and learning.

Should you wish to also speak with any of our ES counselors on conference days, please make an appointment in advance:

  • Nicole Tessmer (Pre-K1 and Pre-K2) <nicoletj@isb.ac.th>
  • Kathryn Manu (Pre-K2, KG, Gr. 1 & 2) <kathrynm@isb.ac.th>
  • Doug Williamson (Gr. 3, 4 & 5) <douglasw@isb.ac.th>

Principal’s Message

LOL!  As always, there was “Lots of Learning” happening throughout the ES this week for kids…and adults! Parents engaged in learning via a new book club that Ms. Manu launched on Wednesday morning; about 20 parents joined the discussion on the book “Permission to Feel” by Marc Brackett. It was an impressive week of learning in classrooms as well. Students engaged in Peace Day activities, read alouds and reflections.  Across many grade levels, students were working on their writing craft and publishing their final writing pieces. And we ended the week by having our PreK-Grade 12 faculty members who are subject area vertical team leaders participate in a professional learning workshop!  LOL, indeed!

Booster Club News

The ISB Booster Club provides extra financial support to students in the arts, athletics, and clubs while promoting school spirit across campus. Promoting school spirit and cheering on our students in all activities provides a happier learning environment and gives the children a more positive educational experience.

Booster Club fundraising efforts support ISB students through recognition boards and photos, catering for cultural events, IASAS bags, athletic equipment, theater equipment, the bronze panther at front of school, graduation events, and many other purchases.

Friday Marketplace is a tradition at ISB!  The Booster Hut started this over a decade ago to allow our youngest Panthers to shop and support the Booster Club. The Friday Marketplace is stocked with small low-cost toys and accessories for students to purchase. Volunteers help the students choose their purchases, count their money, and budget the purchases.

This is a cash only purchase.  Students are welcome to bring 10-100baht to spend.

All students PreK-Grade 5 are welcome to visit Marketplace with a parent after school, and students in Grades 1-5 are invited to the Booster Hut one Friday per month during their morning recess.  Booster Hut volunteers supervise the hallways between the ES and the Booster Hut on these days.

ISB Athletics Update:
ISB and IASAS needs your help! IASAS Student Athlete Housing Request
Wednesday October 5th – Sunday October 9th

Dear Parents and Student-Athletes,

The 2022/2023 IASAS Volleyball Tournament and IASAS Cross Country Championships are fast approaching. Our entire community is gearing up for a spirited and competitive event, the first one in Three Years! ISB will host the five IASAS visiting schools, 180 athletes, from October 5th – 9th, 2022. These season-ending events provide an exceptional opportunity to showcase our teams, our students, and our immense ISB hospitality! We aim to put on an unforgettable event, but in order to do so we require your help. Register: here

IASAS tournaments depend upon the goodwill and generosity of our ISB families to host the visiting IASAS athletes. This reciprocal hosting exchange adds immense value to our athletic program, and it provides a unique opportunity to develop new friendships, share in culture, and strengthen our connections across international communities.

With just two weeks before the IASAS Volleyball and Cross Country events we are in need of help from the ISB Community. Host families can anyone in the ISB community. This includes Elementary, Middle and High School families.

iCare – where did your money and efforts go last year?
Last year, the ISB community banded together to make a difference in many lives. Lives that were directly impacted by COVID and others that have been living a life of poverty in the slums.

Your money and efforts helped iCare make a significant difference.

  • About half a million baht was donated in total from the ISB community and this is the result of all the money raised through fundraisers throughout the year.
  • Over 600,000 people were fed in slums and construction camps.
  • 10 micro businesses were started by single mothers.
  • 2,000 blankets and jackets and sweaters were distributed in northern Thailand during the wintertime.
  • iCare distributed food to 600 people along with supplies for young mothers and infants.
  • Over 160 bicycles were also distributed to school children across districts which have helped kids find an easier way to school.

A short story about Chutima
Statistics are all well and good, but each of those numbers represents lives impacted. The result of which is harder to quantify. One such instance comes to mind from the end of the school year. As the school year was winding down, some of the middle schoolers at ISB initiated a drive to collect bicycles to be donated to those in need- which ended up having a bigger impact than any of us realized, particularly in the life of one of our 15-year-old scholarship students, Chutima.

When Chutima was 13, her mother suffered a stroke that left her almost completely paralyzed, except for the ability to blink, which she quickly developed into a means to communicate with her daughter.  As her mom was caring for Chutima, her younger sister, 5, and her elderly grandmother, overnight Chutima became an adult, responsible for the welfare of the household, having to make decisions that no 13-year-old should have to.

For 2 years Chutima managed the family, caring for the physical needs of her mom and the rest of the family, as well as ensuring her sister went to school, at the expense of her having to drop out of school. All of this is on the disability pension her mom received of 800 baht per month, and the social welfare funds her grandmother received of 600 baht for a total of 1,400 Baht monthly.

Once iCare became aware of this distressing situation, they started doing their best to find a way to get Chutima back into school, as well as get the help this family so desperately needed. As the pieces came together, the very last obstacle was the bus fee of 650 baht per month to get to and from school. Thankfully one of the bicycles that were collected by ISB was a perfect fit for her, enabling her to bike to school daily. We are proud to report that she’s back in school, working hard to catch up on the 2 years she missed out.

So on behalf of Chutima, and thousands of other students like her, we would like to say thank you to each and every one of you in the ISB community for changing her world for the better.

We are excited to work with iCare again this year as they help bring about long-term lasting change to communities in need across Thailand.
