MS Schedule for Next Week

We have an exciting week ahead next week as our Grade 6 & 7 students will be participating in their “trips” April 27-29. Grade 6 is heading to iCamp in Kanchanaburi and Grade 7 is spreading out to various locations in Thailand (including in Bangkok) with an environmental focus. Some students are staying on campus with a leadership program over the 3 days.

The Grade 8s will have their trip May 25-27. More on this next week.

The schedule will stick to the rotation as planned, meaning that G6 & G7 students will “miss” some days in the rotation and pick up again on Monday, May 2nd.

Here’s the schedule for MS for April 25-29:

  • Monday, April 25 – Day 8
  • Tuesday, April 26 – Day 1
  • Wednesday, April 27 – Day 2 (trip for Grades 6 & 7)
  • Thursday, April 28 – Day 3 (trip for Grades 6 & 7)
  • Friday, April 29 – Day 4 (trip for Grades 6 & 7)

For planning ahead, Monday, May 2nd, will be a Day 5 and Wednesday, May 4th is a Thai National Holiday (No School).

Special Middle School Events – Save the dates

  • June 10 – MS Olympics
  • June 16 – Grade 8 Moving On Ceremony

We will update you with more dates as we know them.

Behavior Expectations for School Trips – Working Together

As we approach our upcoming school trips for grades 6 & 7 (grade 8 will be in late May), our teachers and students have been in preparation mode to ensure the trips are a success. Parents and students should have received packing lists and other pertinent information for their child’s upcoming trip.

From ISB @ iCamp 2019

When teachers take children away on overnight trips, they take on a massive responsibility to care for and ensure the safety of each and every student. Activities in nature and off-campus are of course less scaffolded and protected, which means that our team have to be extra-mindful of ensure safety and success. For this reason, when monitoring a large group of students over 3 days and 2 nights, we have to have behavioral expectations in place to ensure that EVERYONE has a positive experience.

Our teacher-chaperones will work with students to adhere to these guidelines. We ask parents to speak with their children in advance about the importance of following instructions, being where you are supposed to be, supporting the safety of self and others, and meeting expectations. When chaperones are distracted by correcting misbehavior, they become less able to monitor the safety of all.

Please have a look at the linked document sharing our Behavior Expectations. We emphasize with students that we all play a role in ensuring that all students have a positive experience, not just ourselves. We appreciate any support families can provide to help us make sure this is a wonderful experience for everyone.

Grade 8 Trip Scheduled for May 25-27

Next week Grades 6 & 7 head off on their Class Trips. We have scheduled the Grade 8 trip for May 25-27. More information will be provided next week, after we meet with the Grade 8 students to share with them the same details. While we will not be able to go all the way to Chiang Mai this year, we are excited to provide students with a fun full-grade trip to celebrate their MS years and have one last shared experience ahead of moving on to high school.

Repeat Announcement: Teacher Feedback Comments for MS Students

Comments can be viewed by following each course link in PowerSchool (see/click graphic on right). We have prepared a single comment report document in PowerSchool to make it easier for you to read them all in one viewing.

Students will be guided through a reflection process after the holiday in which they will read each of their teachers’ comments and set goals for the remainder of the year. We have found that this process ensures that students benefit from the detailed feedback provided by their teachers.

If parents or students have questions about the comments they can reach out to the teacher via email. Please note that we want our teachers to have a restful break away from work and we are encouraging them to stay off of work email. Teachers will respond to parent and student emails following the holiday break. We hope that parents and students use this break time to relax and separate from school stresses themselves.

Repeat Announcement: Spring MAP testing dates – 2022

MS students will take the NWEA Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) test in Math and Reading on May 5 and 6, 2022.

As you may have read in the All-School eNews, MAP assessments are computer-based tests that assess students with a baseline question and then adjust subsequent questions to appropriately challenge each student.  The testing data provides a snapshot of what the student can do at a specific time of the year. This information is useful to our teachers as they decide how to differentiate the learning experience for their students.

Your child does not need to prepare for the MAP tests, nor should they worry or be anxious about taking this test.  We do recommend that all students get a good night’s sleep before the tests and that they eat a healthy breakfast before coming to school. All students will need their laptops for the testing sessions.  Students should have a book to read in case they finish their test early.

If you have concerns about your child taking the MAP assessments, please reach out to your child’s counselor (Kevin Nelson, kevinn@isb.ac.th G6, G7 or Colleen Coady, colleenc@isb.ac.th G7, G8).
