‘OPEN ……..House’

Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents

We have just enjoyed a great week of learning and activities with our students with season one athletics starting and clubs and other activities also up and running. You will have read positive signs about the re-opening of schools in the past few days and we are looking forward to getting students back on campus sooner rather than later. In the meantime, virtual school continues and our teachers (and students) are working diligently to stay on top of their learning at this time.

The HS Open house takes place this coming week on Tuesday, September 7th starting at 6pm. We will send an individual email to each family on Monday that will contain the schedule of class times and the zoom links for your child’s teachers so that you can join the right classes at the right time. There will also be an ‘explainer’ video included in that email to help you log in correctly etc.

You will have an opportunity to meet the teacher, learn a little about the curriculum and assessment for each course and also some of the highlights for each course. With each session only being 10 minutes long, the Open house presentations are not designed for parents to ask questions about their child’s current progress etc. If you do have questions, please reach out to the teachers directly to arrange another time to talk.

Times for Open house (Zoom Links and individual schedules will be sent on MONDAY)

News from the College Counselors

Debbie McDowell
debbiem@isb.ac.th

The Senior Family University Night was on Wednesday. Thank you to all students and parents who attended. For those who were unable to attend or if you would like to review the presentation, please find the recording and the powerpoint here. Senior Family Conferences are underway and should be scheduled by each family before the end of September. Just a reminder that students should complete the Senior Questionnaire as soon as possible for their university counselor. The next Senior Seminar will be on Monday 13 September.

For all grade levels, the annual Greater Bangkok University International Fair will take place on 13-16 September 2021. Students and parents will be welcomed to online university fairs on Monday (13 September), Tuesday (14 September), and Wednesday (15 September). There are nearly 200 universities from around the world registered for the fairs!  A link to join the fairs each evening will be shared closer to the time of the event and it should be noted that no prior registration is required for this university fairs (Monday-Wednesday) or the UK Universities Admissions Panel on Thursday night.  The tentative list of universities on the panel includes: Durham University, King’s College London, New College of the Humanities, University of Manchester, University of Bath, University of Bristol, University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, University of St Andrews and University of Warwick.

On Thursday, 16 September there will be two events:  UK University Admissions Panel and US Case Study Session.  For the U.S. Case Studies session advanced registration is required. In this session, university representatives will lead parents and students through the process of a mock admission committee. The exercise will point out the intricacies of the college application process and the importance of assembling a strong university application. The US Case Study program will conclude with a panel discussion. Although all are welcome to sign up for the specific US Case Studies event, Grade 12 parents and students, then Grade 11 parents and students, will be prioritized due to limited capacity and parents and students will need to be assigned to separate rooms. Registration for the US Case Studies Event is located here. If interested, please be sure to sign up no later than Wednesday, September 8, 2021.

Be sure to check the Virtual University Visit list for university visits that are scheduled exclusively for ISB students and parents. In addition, there are many virtual events available for any students interested in gaining more information about particular institutions.  Be sure to check the Virtual University Visits list on the ISB University/College Counseling website.

News from School Counselor

Kevin Callahan
kevinc@isb.ac.th

Dear High School Parents,

We are the High School Counselors – Jackie Valenzuela, Shannon Leoni, and Kevin Callahan.  We are proud and lucky to be working with your students to help them any way that we can in keeping them productive and happy in these tough times.  Since we aren’t able yet to be on campus, you as parents are our best source of information on how the students are doing and if they are struggling with any part of their life in these strange times.  Please keep a close eye on your students’ routines, screen time, sleep, and diet and don’t hesitate to let their counselor know if you have concerns for their physical and mental health.

The counselors gave a presentation yesterday on “Supporting Your Child’s Social and Emotional Well-being in a Time of Covid” to parents and it was well received by pre-K to grade 12 parents.  Here is the presentation; we think there is some very good information here and we encourage you to take a look.  Have a nice weekend!

Hidden Multilinguals

Avery Udagawa
averyu@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents,

ISB’s after-school Panther Native Language Academy (PNLA) aims to support multilingual students unable to take a class in their native language(s) during the school day, or who need additional support as determined by the daytime teacher.

A native language is generally described as a language used on a daily basis with at least one parent. We typically send PNLA information to families we know are multilingual.

However, we sometimes miss “hidden multilinguals” whose native/near-native language(s) we don’t know about. Examples:

  • Korean student who attended school in French in Africa
  • American students who acquired Spanish in Chile and Peru
  • Thai student who studied Chinese intensively at prior school

If your child(ren) are “hidden multilinguals” and may benefit from PNLA, please get in touch: PantherNativeLanguageAcademy@isb.ac.th

The languages taught in PNLA are native Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, and Thai for PK2. (PK2 Thai will begin later this school year.)

More details about native/near-native language classes at ISB are here.

Please let us know if you have any questions!

PantherNativeLanguageAcademy@isb.ac.th

Best,
Avery Udagawa

Panther Run supporting iCARE (REPEAT)

Chris Mott
chrism@isb.ac.th

iCare Thailand Foundation is a charitable organisation that is committed to meaningful community development that helps the underprivileged. With the COVID pandemic at a record high in Thailand, they need our help to provide food and supplies to those in home isolation in 7 different slums. Due to the order locking down construction camps, iCare also provides food to 7 different construction camps in need.

A food supply bag costs 450 baht and a fresh produce bag costs 115 baht. Every little bit counts towards helping our communities in need. Consider making a small contribution this weekend during our Panther Run. The iCare donation box is located at the ISB Guard Station at the front of the school.

Upcoming Events

11th and 12th of September: Panther Pride – Walk, Run and Bike

20th – 24th September – ISB Spirit Week
