As we previously communicated ISB has been upgrading the air quality monitoring system and with that our response to pollution. You can find more information and updates below.
AQI
Over the past few years there have been questions about the different calculations and values used to determine the Air Quality Index (AQI). ISB has always focused on PM2.5, the most hazardous of the air pollutants in our area and the AQI has been calculated solely on PM2.5.
Air Quality Guidelines
Moving forward, our updated Air Quality Guidelines will also now be based solely on the PM2.5 levels. Along with this, we have provided more clarification on what, “modifications” are when the PM2.5 reaches different levels. (See guidelines.)
Outdoor Sensors
We have installed additional outdoor sensors on campus and now use the average between those sensors to determine the pollutant levels on campus, and therefore our response.
AirGradient
You will see a new partner listed in our guidelines, AirGradient. We have switched over our operating and public display platforms to AirGradient as they provide a more robust integration with our indoor air filtration systems, along with more customizable displays and data access.
Environmental Assured is still providing our positive pressure air filtration and dehumidification systems, and works closely with AirGradient for all of the system monitoring.
All of the links and guidelines on our website have been updated to provide you access to the new public display and guidelines.
Information Displayed
An addition, you will see, to the public display is the indoor, one hour average, PM2.5 reading for classrooms in each division. The filtration systems are only on during normal school operating hours, which means the values will only be displayed during these times. We have also included data from the lightning detection system which we also use to manage outdoor activities.
Over the next few weeks, there may be slight adjustments to the displays as we are continually adding to our filtration system and updating the features.
You can access the public display at the bottom of the ISB home page, or on the Safety and Security page under Air Quality.
