‘Celebrations’
Dear Parents,
As we move closer to the end of the school year we can start to turn our attention to celebrating the successes of our students and recognising their achievements. This is proving to be a bit more difficult in the current climate, as we are not physically on campus and therefore are not able to celebrate together. However, it is important that we do take time to celebrate and recognise the great work and talents of our students. I would like to take some space in today’s E News to do this.
Firstly, our Seniors will be participating in their drive-in graduation on June 1st, 2nd and 3rd whereby our seniors will be able to come onto campus (separately) with their family in order to receive their ISB HS Diploma, a gift from PTA and be filmed and recorded for the graduation film/video due for release on June 12th. In the meantime you can see the wonderful artwork of our ES students who have painted/drawn/sketched portraits of all our Seniors which are now hanging on the front gate of ISB. At the same time our wonderful Senior parent group with support from the PTA and HS Office have arranged for our seniors Yearbook photos to be blown up life-size and made into posters. These posters are hanging outside DaNichada residences close to school. For those not able to see these portraits/posters in person you can visit our ISB High School Instagram page for a few select photos.
Secondly, we will be hosting our annual Awards night on Wednesday 27th May at 6.30pm to recognise students who have excelled in academics, athletics, the arts, and service. More details including a zoom link to that night can be found later in this newsletter.
Additionally we have some great news to share about the wonderful work of our Grade 12 Extended Essay students from their exhibition in February. There is a wonderful video interview on Zoom about the EE and see a snapshot of some of our students’ work by clicking on these links below.

Lastly, there are a number of events coming up for all students and parents to join in and watch relating to the Arts. Mr. Giles has included messages and information about these elsewhere in this edition of E News.

It’s hard in these difficult times to get motivated at times, let alone inspired. But the teachers at ISB have really done an unbelievable job in keeping the students engaged and learning. (And let’s not forget your students – their attendance and participation have been off the charts!) Some students every year are so inspired by a teacher or two that they decide to pursue teaching as a career. How does one do that? Here’s a link to the steps to becoming a certified teacher in the U.S. With some luck, they can teach internationally!
Here’s an article from BK magazine about how to take care of your own mental health “under life’s new normal”. Have a look and remember, your outlook, attitude, fears, and logic have a tremendous effect on your childrens’. Stay strong.

Virtual University Visits
College Counselors are sending information to students about Virtual University Visits. We are aware of the abundance of emails and do not want to overload the parents in-box too. Please ask your child about the virtual visits if you would also like to attend.
Here’s an example:
Students interested in the University of British Columbia – UBC will host a Virtual visit on Wed, June 3 at 10:00 AM (Thailand time). Here’s the Zoom link for the event: https://ubc.zoom.us/j/96437441797 (we realize this is a Thai holiday, but this time was set by UBC)
Please do not hesitate to email your College Counselor if you have any questions.

The final dress rehearsal was as far as this year’s CC Drama piece – Anon(ymous) by Naomi Iizuka – ever got. Cast sickness and the descending cloak of Covid-19 meant that the show never got to achieve its final performances for audiences, and now lives on only in memory…….. and in this handycam footage from the tech booth! Only a dress rehearsal, this was never meant to be seen by audiences, but now this footage is having its moment to shine. Come and watch the live streaming of the CC Piece That Wasn’t, and help celebrate the achievements of the eight actors involved: Kate Hansberry (Grade 10), Lia Zahar (Grade 10), John Jackson (Grade 11), Ashleigh Kennelly (Grade 11), Nonthaporn Tanomvorsin (Grade 11), Ariel Wile (Grade 11), Kate McArthur (Grade12) and Robert Yepes (Grade 12). They worked tirelessly for over three months to prepare a performance they were proud of, and we are all now proud to showcase our final rehearsal for you.
Anon(ymous) is loosely based on Homer’s ‘Odyssey’. It follows a young boy named Anon, a refugee who’s been separated from his mother, as he travels across the United States trying to find her. The piece is a timely reminder of the struggles faced by refugees all over the world, and how even in a place in which they have sought safety they still face trauma, danger, and isolation. The piece is a mix of ensemble-based physical theatre and naturalistic scenes which are both funny and tragic.

Update on ISB Virtual Summer School
Dear Parents,
We’ve received close to 700 registration requests for our upcoming free ISB Virtual Summer School! With all the uncertainties due to the COVID-10 pandemic, our scheduled summer school will definitely be virtual this year.
We are presently processing all registrations and scheduling classes. A reminder that there are a limited number of seats available so students are being scheduled based on the order their registration was received and each individual class is only being scheduled if we have sufficient enrollment for that class. Submitting a registration does not guarantee your child a spot.
Our goal is to complete all the scheduling by the end of next week. Once completed, you will either receive an email with your child’s scheduled summer school class(es), or a note to let you know your child is on the waiting list etc.
At that time, we will advertise which classes are full and which still have some space for students.
A reminder, the ISB Virtual Summer School Program is only open to all students enrolled at ISB for the 2019-20 school year and to new students joining ISB in August (new students will be able to participate only if there are seats available).
Purpose of the ISB Virtual Summer School Program:
To provide students with supplemental academic learning and/or enrichment opportunities, and to provide some opportunities to explore areas of interest through a variety of virtual “camps”.
Dates and Times for ISB Virtual Summer School 2020:
- Opens – Monday, June 22
- Closes – Friday, July 3
- Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 12:00 pm Bangkok time
Students can sign up for either the academic program or enrichment camps, but not both. Please read carefully the more specific information provided about each program and special interest camp tentatively being offered and for the registration procedures, by clicking on the respective links below, or via the Summer School webpage on the ISB website.
For any questions you may have, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Mr. Maurilio Baron-Toaldo
ISB Summer School Director
