Dear Families,
We have all felt the impact of many moving parts this week as information was rapidly changing. Our ISB Attribute of being Adaptable has been front and center as we had to respond to many moving parts. All of this was managed while keeping students at the center; supporting their social and emotional wellbeing while also maintaining good learning, albeit sometimes virtually. Thank you to everyone for helping to support this effort. Please read below for more information about what next week will look like. As always, don’t hesitate to contact us, a counselor, or your child’s teachers if you have any questions or concerns.
In partnership,
-Kelly Armitage, Jeff Scott, and Sarah Fleming
Virtual School
Next week, we will be moving to a full Virtual School as a way for learning to continue for students. Linked here is a handbook for parents with more information. Virtual School may look different across the three divisions. In Elementary School, there will be similarities across a grade level in the learning that students are engaged in, while also allowing for class-specific experiences as well. During Virtual School, we want students to continue to be healthy, active, and well-balanced, and we encourage you to consider this as you set up schedules for your children at home. Teachers will be in contact by Monday morning with more specific information for your child. Please get in touch with them during the week if you have any questions.
Student-Led Conferences
With the closure of school next week, we have made a decision not to hold our Student-Led Conferences on Monday, 23rd and Tuesday, 24th March. These two days will return to being regular learning days for students. We will not be rescheduling the conference days and will be exploring other ways for students to share and celebrate their learning growth with families. Teachers will communicate with you in the coming weeks regarding a revised approach.
ES Parent Engage – Thursday, March 12
Unfortunately, we will need to cancel the Parent Engage that is scheduled for Thursday, March 12th. We will look to find another opportunity for parents to have a firsthand experience with making and design thinking.
Author Tad Hills
We regret to inform you that our visit with author Tad Hills will be postponed. We will inform you with new dates as they become available.
Change in Music Celebration of Learning for KG-Grade 4
Due to the many unforeseen challenges that have surfaced with absent students and cancelling events, we are changing this year’s Music Celebration of Learning format. Instead of performing in the theatre or for parents, students will be sharing their learning with other classes during their music time, in the music classrooms. These performances will be for student audiences only. We’ll be taking video and sharing with families via Seesaw. These videos can be expected at the end of March. This means that the original performances for the week of March 16th, as well as March 26th and 27th are cancelled.

(Repeat) ES PE Swimming 2020
Our swimming unit in PE is just around the corner. We have a total of three sessions of swimming dates for Elementary School. Please see the schedule for all classes and sessions.
Students will be participating in a swimming and water safety unit as part of the Elementary Physical Education (PE) Program. This unit is designed to promote knowledge and skills in the areas of personal water safety, fundamental strokes, and simple water rescues. There will be three swimming specialists along with Corry Day, ISB’s Aquatics Director, assisting the PE teacher with the swimming unit. We will also have lifeguards on deck during every class.
The program is designed to help meet the needs of all of the students, and is based on the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program. Students will be screened and placed in a level that is developmentally appropriate based upon his or her current swimming ability.
What to bring to PE:
Swimsuit, towel, and goggles clearly marked with the student’s name, to every PE lesson. Girls are requested to wear a one-piece swimsuit. UV (rash) protective shirts are permitted, but rash shirts need to be properly fitted, as loose rash shirts inhibit swimming efficiency. Should a student forget to bring a swimsuit, towel, or goggles, they will be provided with one from the aquatics program to be used for the day and this will need to be returned at the end of class.
Students with long hair need to wear a swim cap or tie their hair back for each lesson. Students may bring their own sunscreen if they desire.
In the event of inclement weather, students will have an alternate PE lesson so they need to come each day prepared in their normal PE attire, including athletic shoes and socks. Students may bring crocs or sandals in their swim bag should they choose to wear them after swimming class.
Swimming is a part of the ISB PE curriculum and full participation is expected. Any student who is unable to participate in class must inform the PE teacher in writing or via e-mail. If no notification is received prior to their PE class, they will be expected to participate.
If you or your child have any questions about the swimming unit please do not hesitate to contact your child’s PE teacher.
ES PE Team
(Repeat) After School Supervision
Any elementary school student on campus outside of regular school hours, who is not participating in a school-sponsored event, must be actively supervised by an adult in charge, appointed by the family. This includes being in the elementary Learning Hub (library).
