All School eNews-IASAS Cultural Convention for Dance, Drama , Tech, Forensics,Debate and Music

Despite the sad news that students from IASAS schools will not be able to travel to participate in IASAS Music, FAD, and DDT events here in Bangkok, Taipei, and Singapore respectively, we have put together an extravaganza of sorts to celebrate all three CC areas right here at home!!! Plan to attend ISB’s first-ever IASAS Combined Dance, Drama, Tech, Forensics, Debate, and Music Cultural Convention on March 6th!!! On that Friday join the 70 plus ISB delegates in the CC Building to hear their 35 musical presentations, 12 forensics speeches, 2 dance and drama performances, and at least 2 debates (depending on the outcome of the first 4 virtual rounds held Wednesday afternoon, and all-day Thursday, March 4th and 5th, in the MPB’s). HS classes are invited to attend all scheduled events SEE HERE, as are parents and community members. To the many families who had generously volunteered to house visiting musicians before IASAS Music CC was canceled – THANK YOU!!!

Invention Center Hosts Guest Designer/Artist/Woodworker

Invention Center Hosts Designer/Artist/Woodworker, Nucharin Wangphongsawasd
March 9th – 23rd, 2020

The ISB Invention Center is bringing designer/artist/woodworker Nucharin Wangphongsawasd to share experiences and knowledge with students and the ISB community in the field of woodworking. Her works were inspired by repetitive patterns from both natural and manmade objects, driven by an exploration of forms in the creation of each piece. She focuses on experimentation with different types of repetition and progression through different woodworking techniques, to create a body of work that shares feelings, fragments of memory, and life experiences with the audience. Khun Nucharin’s goal is to enrich ISB’s community through the creative thoughts and actions of its learners.

Khun Nuharin will be working with middle and high school design classes. There will be an opportunity for other classes to sign up and work on a collaborative project.

There will also be a weekend woodworking workshop on Saturday, March 21st, in the Invention Center to design and build your own projects with her teaching. Sign up and see details HERE.

Traffic Jam – Human Trafficking in Thailand

Traffic Jam is  HS service club whose mission is to raise awareness and educate people about human trafficking in Thailand. Both sex and labor trafficking are, unfortunately, prevalent in Thailand. 9 out of 1000 people in Thailand are slaves. It is estimated that 610,000 people in Thailand are the victims of trafficking. March 11th is #myfreedomday, a student-driven event around the world designed to raise awareness about modern slavery. To support #myfreedomday, during MS and HS lunches in the pit, ISB will be hosting an acoustic performance by professional singer and ISB alum Alex Sypsomos. Please come watch the event and donate. There will also be food and snacks available for purchase. All money donated will go to Operation Underground Railroad, which sets up local sting operations to catch human traffickers.

Board of Trustees Annual Election, 2020

The ISB Board of Trustees would like to announce its annual election, which will take place on Tuesday, May 12th, 2020, the day of the International School Association (ISA) Annual General Meeting. (The ISA is comprised of all ISB parents and guardians and is the license holder of ISB.) Election results will be announced that evening at the 7:00 pm AGM. Board nominations open on Friday, March 13th, and close on Friday, April 3rd.

The ISB Board of Trustees is currently composed of eleven elected positions and up to four appointed positions. This year there will be three open seats on the Board to be filled by election. Newly elected trustees will serve a two-year term, beginning August 1st, 2020.

Candidates for the Board of Trustees (BOT) should be aware of the many rewards and responsibilities of serving on the Board. The Board is the guardian of the school’s mission, and as such, sets policy, focuses on school governance, and addresses long-term, strategic issues. The Board is not involved in day-to-day school management. The full Board meets once a month in an open regular session, followed by a closed executive session. Board meetings occur in the evenings at ISB and last approximately two-three hours. In addition, trustees attend an annual retreat in August.

Trustees also serve on one or more committees corresponding to their skills and interests. Current committees are the Business Committee, the Committee on Trustees, and the Strategic Improvement and Learning Committee. Committees meet once a month for one-two hours and are the working groups of the Board. Subjects such as financial stability, budget oversight, stewardship of ISB’s educational program, evaluation and training of the Board, and future strategic improvements in alignment with the mission of ISB, are examples of issues addressed by the committees.

Trustees are charged with the responsibility to represent ISB and the ISA as a whole, rather than any one constituency within the community. No specific professional or personal background is needed, other than ISA membership, a positive attitude, the ability to commit to the time requirements, and a strong interest in maintaining and further enhancing the excellence of ISB. The rewards of Board service include the opportunity to interact with our dynamic school leadership team, and the chance to understand and help shape ISB’s future growth and direction.

Please note these important election dates and activities:

  • Friday, March 13th, 2020, 12 noon  – Nominations open – Nomination forms will be available at the Head of School’s office or available for download here: Click here
  • Wednesday, April 1st, 2020, 6:30 pm, MPB3  – “What is a Trustee?” This meeting is an information session on what it means to be a Trustee. All interested parties and community members are welcome.
  • Friday, April 3rd, 2020, 12 noon – Nominations close – Nomination forms must be submitted in both electronic and hard copy by this deadline. Electronic copies must be sent to BOT Secretary Joy Davy at joyd@isb.ac.th (with your name as the subject), and hard copies must be filed with Khun Oor in the Head of School’s office.
  • Tuesday, May 12, 2020 – Election, 7:00 am – 6:00 pm & AGM, 7:00 pm

Postponement of ISALT Conference

Dear ISALT Participants and Presenters,

It is with much regret that we inform you that the ISALT Conference scheduled for April 25th, 2020, has been postponed until next semester.

On March 2nd, the Office of the Private Education Commission (OPEC) issued an official communication to schools to “delay invitation anyone from foreign countries to attend meetings or seminars or related events until the situation of the epidemic of Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is resolved”.

We also understand that schools and individuals are hesitant about traveling at this time.

Full refunds will be issued, and we will be in touch in the next couple of weeks.

Once we have determined a new date, we will begin the registration process again.

We thank you very much for your support of the inaugural ISALT conference, and we look forward to hosting later in 2020.

Sincerely,

Gaby Geneser, gabyg@isb.ac.th
Loreto ALONSO, loretoa@isb.ac.th

Campus Access Changes for Weekends

Thank you, everyone, for your support and patience this week with the new access guidelines which we have had to implement.  All has gone quite smoothly and should get better each day.

Due to the staffing needs to support a safe and healthy campus, we are adjusting the access hours for the weekends.

Community members (Students, parents, visitors) may access the facility starting at 8:00 am, on Saturday and Sunday.  I understand this may impact a few people; however, we have to have our screening systems in place every day of the week.

The entrance to the campus will be closed at 6:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.

As a reminder, everyone must have their ISB ID card with them to access campus during the school day, after school, and on weekends.  This includes ALL students returning for afterschool activities.

West Entrance – HS Bike Gate

Over the February break, the public canal construction along the west side of campus extended into the area of our west bike entrance.  Unfortunately, this gate is going to be unavailable until August 2020.

We understand this will cause some inconvenience to those arriving on bike/foot from the west side of Nichada.
