Parent Coffee on Kids and Sleep

We are excited to be hosting a Middle School Parent Coffee on October 31st.

The topic on October 31st will be Sleep and the Adolescent, and will look at what our own ISB students are saying about their sleep habits and what they would like at home to help them be healthy. The presenters will be MS Wellness teacher Kellie Alexander, and MS Counselor, Carmel Kean.

Join us for the Parent Coffee on October 31st, 9:00 – 10:00 AM.

Reminder about boarding school applications

by MS Counselors

If you are planning to apply for admission to boarding school for the 2020-21 school year, please make an appointment to meet with your child’s counselor as early as possible – and definitely before November 1. For us to best support your child’s application process, it is very important that parents meet with their child’s counselor, in person.

October is typically when students who are planning on applying to boarding school register for the SSAT, ISEE, or other necessary testing (e.g., TOEFL). This is also the time when applicants begin gathering teacher references.

Part of the process of the counselor meeting will be to coordinate reference writing. Parents should not write directly to teachers for references, but rather coordinate those references requests through their child’s counselor. This will enable us to ensure that references and other documentation is submitted to the receiving institution.

Please note, in order to allow teachers time to provide a thorough, quality reference for your child, we ask that you allow a 4 week turn around time from the time the reference request is received until the reference is completed. Students who are applying to schools with January application deadlines must submit their reference requests by November 10, through the counselor.

Thank you for working in partnership with your child’s counselor to ensure a smooth transition to boarding school.

October Break – School reopens on October 28

ISB students do not have school next week and school will reopen on October 28th, with a Day 5 in the middle school.

Have a wonderful break!

October break a time for rest and family

In recognition of the break being a time for families to spend time together and for students to relax and rest, we make the school days immediately following the break, assessment free. This means that there won’t be tests or assignments due on the Monday or Tuesday after the break.

If students are behind on work, they may have catch up to do over the break, or be working on long term assignments, due later in the week, but they should not be stressing or studying for assessments on the Monday or Tuesday. We encourage students to read for pleasure and enjoy some time being active.

Have a wonderful break!

Yearbook Photos for Middle School Students

Middle School students will have their Yearbook photo taken on Tuesday and Wednesday of the week following the break (October 29 and 30). There will also be a make up day on Thursday, October 31st. Please note that students will take the photo during their social studies class:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 29: Day 6
  • Wednesday, Oct 20: Day 7

Students must take their yearbook photo wearing the green ISB uniform shirt.

MS Students spreading kindness in the ES

Last week members of the Middle School Student Life Council joined grade 3 to share and care in a “kindness lesson.” This was the first of a series of collaborative projects these students will do together this year.

These experiences allow our middle school student leaders to teach elementary students to become more socially intelligent, value driven and caring members of our community, and also give them the opportunity to practice key leadership skills. ES students learn more about our ISB attributes and values and both groups of students develop long lasting buddy friendships.

BBSA – Baseball and softball registration open for 2019-20 season

Just a quick reminder if you have not yet registered your child for baseball/softball.

Bangkok Baseball Softball Association (BBSA) has organized baseball/softball play for the past 59 years in Bangkok. There are leagues for boys and girls ages 4 yrs – 18 yrs.  Please note registration is open from now until November 1st.  Current fees per player are THB 3,600.  There is a late fee for registrations after November 1st.

You can make your payment at the Community Activity Office (CAO) or pay by Thai bank wire transfer.  Cash, credit cards and Thai baht checks are accepted for payment at the CAO office.  The CAO Office is open Monday – Friday, 7:00AM to 11:00AM and 12:00PM to 3:00PM.

Player assessment will be held on between Monday, Nov 4th to Thursday, Nov 7th.  A specific schedule will be sent to parents and players soon.  All players are strongly encouraged to attend their assessment sessions to allow the coaches to create fair and balanced teams.

Opening Day for baseball/softball is on Saturday, Nov 16th.  Games will generally played on Saturdays with an occassional Friday evening game.  Games will continue every weekend until the league championships the weekend of February 14/15th.  There will be no games during the winter break at ISB but we will continue play on Saturday, January 11th 2020.  The game schedule will be published approximately one week before the season begins.

Practices will begin the week of Nov 14th.   All teams will practice once per week during the season as a weekly practice is important to skills development and to learn the fundamentals of teamwork, etc.  There are also optional weekly practices at NIST and Bangkok Patana for downtown families.  There will a fee charged for these practices as BBSA is charged by these schools for field usage.

On the registration form you will also have an opportunity to volunteer to be a coach, assistant coach or team parent.  Please consider helpng out with your child’s team in some way.  The kids really love having their parents helping out with their team and you will have a great time.  No previous baseball experience is necessary.
