‘Attributes’
Justin Alexander

Dear Parents,
It was great to see so many of you here at school today at the Parent Student Teacher Conferences checking in with teachers about your child’s progress, strengths, and areas for growth. I trust that the conversations you had at the conferences lead to further discussions with your children over the weekend about their progress and experiences at school so far this year. Those conversations need not be centered solely on grades, but should also be opportunities to celebrate the strengths of your children (both in the classroom and outside) in addition to investigating areas for growth and improvement.

Thank you to our students in attendance on Thursday at our Attributes day (Grades 9/10) and College Day (Grades 11/12). A wide variety of wellness and Attribute sessions were offered by teachers (and some students) that included cricket, yoga, philosophy, how to create a play in 120 minutes, barista skills, gift card marking, photography classes, self organizing tips and many more wonderful and varied activities centred around ISB’s attributes.  Creative, Self Managing, Social Intelligence, Global Minded, Value Driven and Adaptable. You can see a few photos of the day on the ISB High school instagram page (link here)

In addition our older students spent valuable time working on their college preparations, Extended Essay, CAS (Creativity, Action, and Service) and other aspects of their academic program. Thank you again to our teachers for their amazing work in organizing and running such wonderful sessions and to our students for their enthusiasm and participation.

Have a wonderful weekend.

News from HS Counselors

We hope Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences went well today!

As part of our health education and substance use prevention efforts, we have invited a prevention specialist from FCD Prevention Works to visit our school from October 7-9. FCD is a non-profit organization that provides alcohol, nicotine, and other drug education to schools around the world. FCD prevention specialists will present the most up-to-date information available on the physiological and psychological effects of various drugs (with a focus on vaping this visit), and provide a forum for discussing social, cultural, and personal issues that relate to the choices people make. FCD believes in involving the school community in prevention education, not just students.

With this in mind, we would like to invite you to an FCD parent presentation, with a focus on vaping. The meeting will be held in the MPB next Wednesday, October 9 from 8-9:30am.  We hope you can join us!

College Coffee #2

Thank you to the 57 parents that attended this Coffee about standardized testing.  This meeting touched on different standardized tests and for different countries.  See the attached for the PowerPoint.  The agenda for the remaining College Coffees will come out next week.  The next College Coffee will be November 5.  Topic to be announced.

College and Attributes Day

The entire High School student body participated in Thursday’s College and Attributes Day.  In reference to College Counseling… the Grade 11’s had sessions on Cialfo (sign up) and a “Blind Taste Test” workshop.  Ask your son or daughter what they did during this session!! The Grade 12’s had two sessions with their College Counselor.  The first session was general announcements and specifics about Early applications (Oct. 15, Nov. 1 & Nov. 15).  The students also used the time as a work session (college applications, essays, research, etc.)  The second senior session was a time for College Counselors to meet individually with students as they once again had a work session!!  The seniors did a great job and we believe they appreciated the dedicated “work” time for college applications.

PSAT 11

Grade 11 students will take PSAT on Wednesday October 16.  Those students will be pre-registering on Tuesday October 8 at 1:10.  If students want to OPT OUT of taking the PSAT 11, they need to complete a form with parent signature.  Students should come to the HS counseling center to discuss this with their College Counselor and get the form.

Unlocking the World with a Family

On Thursday, October 17, 2019, from 7:45 to 9:15 a.m. in MPB 1, ISB EAL and Native Language faculty and administrators will offer a workshop for parents from all divisions (ES, MS, HS) about maintaining students’ native languages while they also study in English at ISB. This will be similar to the Raising Multilinguals workshop offered in prior years, and is especially useful for new families.

At this workshop, faculty and administrators will:

  • Present reasons to maintain native language, based on research
  • Describe language classes and resources available at ISB
  • Discuss the importance of making a family language plan

Faculty will also lead small group discussions of how to nurture particular languages, how to support multilingual development at home, and how to make a language plan work.

Please join us! Parents of students in PreK through Grade 12 are welcome. For further information, please email: nativelanguage@isb.ac.th
