 ‘Lights, Camera, Action?’

Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th
Dear Parents,
After a well deserved long weekend, we filled this week with a variety of activities and events for our students. The Climate Action Peace Day assembly on Wednesday morning was closely followed by the ISB World University Fair in the Rajendra where ISB welcomed nearly 200 Colleges and Universities from all around the world to speak with our students and parents about their institutions. We were also blessed to host the world-famous conservationist Sandeun “Lek” Chailert on Wednesday evening as she presented her documentary ‘Love and Bananas’ on the rescue of Asian elephants from cruel captivity.

Thank you to our HS ISB GIN (Global Issues Network) who were the MC’s for the Peace Day assembly on Wednesday and for the other ISB HS student groups who were involved in the production of this great school community event. The timing of our Climate Action peace day is significant as it took place just a few days before an important world event (ClimateStrike day – Friday, September 20th) instigated by the determined and committed 16-year-old Greta Thunberg.  To show our solidarity and support for this movement our HS students gathered for the last 10 minutes of the day today along with MS students on Field D.

We look forward to continued urgency and action regarding climate change and supporting our students in the leading role that they have in pushing for action and change.

Regards
Justin Alexander
High School Principal

GCW registrations continue next week for Grade 9 & 10!
Andy Vaughan
andyv@isb.ac.th

This week we begun the Global Citizenship Week (GCW) sign ups for February 2020. Registration for Global Citizenship Week courses will continue this coming Monday, 23 September at 7:00pm for Grade 10 and will continue on Thursday, 26 September at 7:00pm for Grade 9.

It is very important that prior to your child registering, you have conversations with them that clearly limit the cost of trips you are willing to pay. If students move courses after they are placed, they will be moved to in-Thailand, lower cost courses.

Please find here the link to the GCW Booklet for 2019-20

For any questions, please email Mr. Vaughan directly at: andyv@isb.ac.th or Khun Pat Boonswad patarinb@isb.ac.th

News from HS Counselors
Kevin Davy
kevinc@isb.ac.th
As part of our health education and substance use prevention efforts, we have invited a prevention specialist from FCD Prevention Works to visit our school from October 7-9. FCD is a non-profit organization that provides alcohol, nicotine, and other drug education to schools around the world. FCD prevention specialists will present the most up-to-date information available on the physiological and psychological effects of various drugs (with a focus on vaping this visit), and provide a forum for discussing social, cultural, and personal issues that relate to the choices people make. FCD believes in involving the school community in prevention education, not just students.

With this in mind, we would like to invite you to an FCD parent presentation, with a focus on vaping. The meeting will be held in the MPB on Wednesday, October 9 from 8-9:30am.  We hope you can join us!

One of our Freshman Seminar sessions focused on the function of sleep  and  how to promote healthy sleep. Here are some considerations below.

Sleep promoting Lifestyle

Have a consistent sleep schedule

  • Take part in moderate exercise
  • Refrain from exercising 2 hours before going to bed
  • Reduce your consumption of caffeinated beverages

Bed Time Ritual

  • Avoid using your smartphone or computer 2 hours prior to going to bed
  • Turn your phones to automatically change to night mode during evening hours to desaturate the harmful blue LED light
  • Create lowered dim light in rooms where you spend your evening hours
  • Take a hot bath
  • Keep a consistent routine, such as meditating, writing a journal, etc.

Sleep Sanctuary

  • Make a “Tech-Free” zone
  • Avoid powerful overhead lights
  • Maintaining complete darkness throughout the night with blackout curtains and/or eye masks
  • Modify alarm clocks, do away with the snooze button
  • Core temperature needs to decrease by about 1 degree CelsiusIn addition, this article shares some routines to help individuals fall asleep.

Lastly, one last thought. This week we celebrated World Peace Day. Being at peace with each other is one way to make the world a better place. The add on we would encourage is being at peace with ourselves. How we treat ourselves sometimes with negative internal  dialogue is something we would just about never address another.  Be kind to yourself and  have a great weekend.

BCT will be back on stage this September with an imaginative storyteller production of “Shipwrecked! An Entertainment – The Amazing Adventures of Louis d Rougemont (as told by himself)”, a fun-filled entertainment for the whole family.

The adventurous Louis de Rougemont invites you to hear his amazing story of bravery, survival and celebrity that left nineteenth-century England spellbound. Dare to be whisked away in a story of the high seas, populated by exotic islanders, flying wombats, giant sea turtles and a monstrous man-eating octopus. “Shipwrecked”  examines how far we’re willing to blur the line between fact and fiction in order to leave our mark on the world.
