Love & Bananas

The Movie: Love & Bananas

ISB is thrilled to host a very special screening of the highly acclaimed documentary Love and Bananas. This documentary focuses on the work of conservationist Sandeun “Lek” Chailert and the rescue of Asian elephants from cruel captivity. In addition to the movie we are honored that Kuhn Lek will join us for this event. The screening is open to the community and free of charge (donations are optional on the evening or at Elephant Nature Park website (https://www.elephantnaturepark.org/). The movie is unrated, and the director has intentionally kept the graphic content low to enable reach of the next generation of animal advocates. However, at  ISB we regularly refer to Common Sense Media which recommends the age of 13+ for viewing this. Here is an outline from Common Sense Media:

Parents need to know that Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story is a 2018 documentary about the work conservationist Lek Chailert is doing to rescue Asian elephants from cruel captivity. There are some intense scenes in which young elephants are shown being taken from their mothers, then placed in a “crush box” where they are beaten with sticks and chains for 24 hours straight until they are “broken” for training — to be ridden by tourists or taught to perform in circuses. There are scenes of elephants who have lost legs from stepping on land mines, whose legs are bloodied from abuse, and whose bodies are scarred from abuse at the hands of humans. An elephant who lost an eye from getting hit with a slingshot is shown. These scenes and discussion of the cruelty and exploitation that Asian elephants suffer might be too intense for younger viewers and sensitive animal lovers of any age. Overall, this informative documentary showcases the positive work that conservationist Lek Chailert has achieved by rescuing elephants from cruel captivity and keeping them safe and happier in nature preserves where they’re free to move around and frolic with other elephants.

UNCHR Charity Fun Run – Spirit Night

This year on September 27th, in alignment with our mission, we will be hosting a fun run at ISB, in support of the worldwide 2 Billion Kilometres to Safety campaign. This worldwide event aims to raise awareness about the plight of refugees, raise funds for families seeking refuge, and most importantly, creates the opportunity for the public to stand in solidarity with them. Each year refugee families travel 2 billion km in order to reach safety, and by coming out and supporting this cause, it will help emphasize how strongly we as a community value being globally-minded and caring citizens. Join us at 6:00pm – 6:30pm on the track and join us from 3:30pm – 7:30pm in the ES Auxi where the UNHCR club will be setting up multiple booths advocating for this cause. Setting up fun carnival games intended to be inclusive towards kids and adults of all ages.

Why we started UNHCR
My name is Pleng Kruesopon, a Sophomore student here at ISB. Last year, my friends and I decided to initiate this club called the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees a chapter of the UNHCR organization. Our club’s mission is to create lasting solutions for refugee lives through education and long term connections while inspiring students to become future refugee advocates by working with the UNHCR.

Driving in Nichada – and Thailand – what license do you need?

by: Mark Hevland, Head of Risk Management
markh@isb.ac.th

We would like to remind you of some of the Nichada and Thailand driving regulations. Golf carts are not allowed to be operated on public roads in Thailand, but are accepted within the Nichada Community. Nichada rules, as detailed in the March 2018 Nichada Thani Newsletter, clearly state that you must “Have a valid driving license on your person if you are the operator of a vehicle”. A golf cart is considered a vehicle.

Please note that this rule applies to everyone in Nichada. Students are only allowed to drive a golf cart/scooter/motorbike if they have a valid driving license.

ISB follows, and supports, all Thailand regulations and driving laws. Operators of motor vehicles in Thailand must have a valid drivers license. Thai law allows a student of 15 years old to apply for a license which allows them to operate a motor scooter at 110cc or less.  To obtain a license to operate a car or motor cycle over 110cc, applicants must be 18 years of age.  All expats living in Thailand are required to get a Thai drivers license.

Here is some guidance as to how to do so, for those not aware.

Option 1:
You have a valid International Driving permit or you have a current driver’s license from your own country. (If your Drivers License is not in English, it must be translated into Thai or English and certified by your embassy.)

With either of these documents you may apply for Thai Driviers License without the automated and driving tests. You will still need to take and pass the eye-color and reaction tests and attend 1-4 hour Video Class.

Option 2:
If you don’t have a valid drivers license from your own country OR your license is currently not in English (and you don’t want to go to the embassy to get it translated into Thai or English and verified):

You need to take an eye-color and reaction test, attend the 1-4 hours traffic law class, the automated test (you will be given a traffic law book in English to study first), and an outdoor driving test the next day. The whole process may take two days and you must pass all sections.

You can apply for the driver’s license at any Land Transportation Offices in Thailand. There is an office located in Nonthaburi: https://her.is/2ITzBzu.

More information about a getting a Thai driver license can be obtained here.

www.dlt.go.th/en/two-year-license/

For students wishing to park on campus, please see the following.

As noted in the ISB High School Handbook:

 – Only students with a valid Thai driver’s license may drive/park a car on campus
 – Students who are 15 years or older may drive/park a motor scooter on campus provided they:

  • Have a Thai driver’s license for their age group.
  • Obtain a parking permit sticker from the HS Office.
  • Always wears a motorcycle helmet (and only carries passengers with helmets) on and off campus.
