Fair weather ahead
Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your attendance and involvement last night at the HS Open House where we had the best ever % attendance by parents over the past 6 or so years. Grade 9 parents win the prize with nearly 70% of Grade 9 parents attending the HS Open House. Thank you for taking the time to visit your children’s classrooms, meet teachers and learn about the interesting and exciting work and learning that is taking place in their lessons.

Next week is a busy and exciting week with the Peace Day assembly on Wednesday (students and faculty are wearing WHITE to school on that day) and the ISB World University Fair starting at 1.30pm on the very same day. The ISB World University fair is huge with nearly 200 Universities from all over the world joining us here on campus to answer questions and share information about their respective Universities. You can read more below in the College Counseling section, but our Grade 11 and Grade 12 students will be able to attend the fair from 1.30pm on Wednesday, whilst our Grade 9 and 10 students can join in after 2.25pm. Parents are welcome to attend the fair and can join us in the Rajendra gym on Wednesday from 1.30pm onwards – please bring your ISB parent lanyard.

Have a wonderful ISB school holiday on Friday and we look forward to seeing you next week.

Regards
Justin Alexander
High School Principal

GCW Registration Opens Next Week for Seniors & Juniors!
Andy Vaughan
andyv@isb.ac.th

Last week we released the Global Citizenship Week (GCW) Course booklet for courses offered in February 2020. Registration for Global Citizenship Week courses will begin this coming Monday, 16 September at 7:00pm for Seniors and will continue on Thursday, 19 September at 7:00pm for Juniors.

It is very important that prior to your child registering, you have conversations with them that clearly limit the cost of trips you are willing to pay. If students move courses after they are placed, they will be moved to in-Thailand, lower cost courses.

Please find here the link to the GCW Booklet for 2019-20

For any questions, please email Mr. Vaughan directly at: andyv@isb.ac.th or Khun Pat Boonswad patarinb@isb.ac.th

News from HS Counselors
Kevin Davy
kevinc@isb.ac.th
Students are set in their classes for the semester and teachers are assessing their learning in various subjects.  If you are contacted by a teacher who indicates that your student is struggling in that subject area, don’t hesitate to make an appointment to find out what the difficulty is and how you can best support your student to improve their understanding and results.

Now that the school year is in full swing, your children should have a good idea of what the expectations and challenges will be for them for the 2019-20 school year.  Time management is probably the biggest challenge for our on-the-go students, and there are lots of suggestions for managing time wisely.  See if some of these can work for your student.

Does it seem like there’s never enough time in the day to get everything done? Feel like you’re always running late? Here are some tips for taking control of your time and organizing your life.

  • Make a “To Do” List Every Day. Put things that are most important at the top and do them first. If it’s easier, use a planner to track all of your tasks. And don’t forget to reward yourself for your accomplishments.
  • Use Spare Minutes Wisely. Get some reading done on the bus ride home from school, for example, and you’ll kill two birds with one stone.
  • Find the Right Time. You’ll work more efficiently if you figure out when you do your best work. For example, if your brain handles math better in the afternoon, don’t wait to do it until late at night.
  • Review Your Notes Every Day. You’ll reinforce what you’ve learned, so you need less time to study. You’ll also be ready if your teacher calls on you or gives a pop quiz.
  • Get a Good Night’s Sleep. Running on empty makes the day seem longer and your tasks seem more difficult.
  • Communicate Your Schedule to Others. If phone calls are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends that you take social calls from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. It may sound silly, but it helps.
  • Become a Taskmaster. Figure out how much free time you have each week. Give yourself a time budget and plan your activities accordingly.
  • Don’t Waste Time Agonizing. Have you ever wasted an entire evening by worrying about something that you’re supposed to be doing? Was it worth it? Instead of agonizing and procrastinating, just do it.
  • Keep Things in Perspective. Setting goals that are unrealistic sets you up for failure. While it’s good to set high goals for yourself, be sure not to overdo it. Set goals that are difficult yet reachable.

The Movie: Love & Bananas
Kevin Davy
kevind@isb.ac.th

ISB is thrilled to host a very special screening of the highly acclaimed documentary Love and Bananas. This documentary focuses on the work of conservationist Sandeun “Lek” Chailert and the rescue of Asian elephants from cruel captivity. In addition to the movie we are honored that Kuhn Lek will join us for this event. The screening is open to the community and free of charge (donations are optional on the evening or at Elephant Nature Park website (https://www.elephantnaturepark.org/). The movie is unrated, and the director has intentionally kept the graphic content low to enable reach of the next generation of animal advocates. However, at  ISB we regularly refer to Common Sense Media which recommends the age of 13+ for viewing this. Here is an outline from Common Sense Media:

Parents need to know that Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story is a 2018 documentary about the work conservationist Lek Chailert is doing to rescue Asian elephants from cruel captivity. There are some intense scenes in which young elephants are shown being taken from their mothers, then placed in a “crush box” where they are beaten with sticks and chains for 24 hours straight until they are “broken” for training — to be ridden by tourists or taught to perform in circuses. There are scenes of elephants who have lost legs from stepping on land mines, whose legs are bloodied from abuse, and whose bodies are scarred from abuse at the hands of humans. An elephant who lost an eye from getting hit with a slingshot is shown. These scenes and discussion of the cruelty and exploitation that Asian elephants suffer might be too intense for younger viewers and sensitive animal lovers of any age. Overall, this informative documentary showcases the positive work that conservationist Lek Chailert has achieved by rescuing elephants from cruel captivity and keeping them safe and happier in nature preserves where they’re free to move around and frolic with other elephants.
