Notes from MS Principal’s Forum
This week, we hosted our MS Principal’s Forum. Thank you to MS PTA Coordinators, Kelly and Ferda, and the parent committee who solicited questions and brought the parental concerns to our attention. Also thank you to those who attended – your feedback helps us improve as a school.
Here are the slides from the presentation. It may be easier to read the text in full screen view.
Grade 6 & 7 Human Growth and Sexuality Parent presentation
This week ISB Wellness teachers hosted a parent information session about the upcoming Human Growth and Sexuality lessons taught in PE/Wellness classes for grades 6 & 7, and in Wellness 8 classes for grade 8.
While having summary documents or presentation slides are never quite the same as attending a presentation, we are sharing notes from the grade 6 & 7 session below. Grade 8 parents will receive direct communication from Ms. Perkins with a summary of the unit ahead as well as information about upcoming parent sessions specific to grade 8 needs.

Follow up from ISB showing of Angst
This week high school counselors hosted a showing of the documentary, Angst, focused on Anxiety in children and parents. There was a wonderful turnout of parents from all divisions and we hope to continue the dialogue on how we can understand and support wellness for all.
The High School Counseling Office has graciously shared some of their resources from the evening here:
We had a great turnout this past Wednesday for our showing of the award winning film Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety. Over 100 parents from across all school divisions came to see the film and discuss the surrounding issues of anxiety and mental health. We will be screening the film to our students in the near future. Angst is an IndieFlix Original, the documentary designed to raise awareness around anxiety. The goal is to start a global conversation about anxiety and mental health. Most importantly we hope the film will help people identify and understand the symptoms of anxiety disorders and encourage them to reach out for help. The school has bought the license to screen the movie a select number of times, unfortunately you can not purchase it online at present.
Below are some resources that where handed out on the evening. Plus there are some great additional links and information that wasn’t shared at that time. The bottom link here is a recent article written by Kevin Davy (High School Counselor) for the most recent Touchstone magazine. The written focus is our distorted thoughts. This ties in nicely to thoughts and ideas surrounding anxiety. It also contains a few helpful links.

Board of Trustees Annual Election, 2019
The ISB Board of Trustees would like to announce its annual election, which will take place on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, the day of the International School Association (ISA) Annual General Meeting. (The ISA is comprised of all ISB parents and guardians and is the license holder of ISB.) Election results will be announced that evening at the 7:00 pm AGM. Board nominations open on Friday, March 15 and close on Friday, April 12.
The ISB Board of Trustees is currently composed of eleven elected positions and up to four appointed positions. This year there will be eight open seats on the Board to be filled by election. Newly elected trustees will serve a two-year term, beginning August 1, 2019.
Candidates for the Board of Trustees (BOT) should be aware of the many rewards and responsibilities of serving on the Board. The Board is the guardian of the school’s mission, and as such sets policy, focuses on school governance and addresses long-term, strategic issues. The Board is not involved in day-to-day school management. The full Board meets once a month in an open regular session, followed by a closed executive session. Board meetings occur in the evenings at ISB and last approximately two-three hours. In addition, trustees attend an annual retreat in August.
Trustees also serve on one or more committees corresponding to their skills and interests. Current committees are the Business Committee, the Committee on Trustees, and the Strategic Improvement and Learning Committee. Committees meet once a month for one-two hours and are the working groups of the Board. Subjects such as financial stability, budget oversight, stewardship of ISB’s educational program, evaluation and training of the Board, and future strategic improvements in alignment with the mission of ISB, are examples of issues addressed by the committees.
Trustees are charged with the responsibility to represent ISB and the ISA as a whole, rather than any one constituency within the community. No specific professional or personal background is needed, other than ISA membership, a positive attitude, the ability to commit to the time requirements, and a deep interest to maintain and further enhance the excellence of ISB. The rewards of Board service include the opportunity to interact with our dynamic school leadership team, and the opportunity to understand and help shape ISB’s future growth and direction.
