ES e-News for March 1, 2019

Student Led Conferences – March 7, 8
We are looking forward to seeing you at our Student Led Conferences on March 7-8. Please access your child’s individual letter containing additional details in PowerSchool by clicking here (click “Parent Conference” on the left hand side). At the bottom of the letter you will find the link to schedule conferences and other useful links.  Scheduling for the conferences opened Tuesday, February 26 at 8:00 AM and closes Tuesday, March 5 at 2:00 PM.

Please make sure you schedule your child’s Student Led Conference before Tuesday, March 5 at 2:00 PM.

Here are some things to consider as we approach the conferences:

Before the conference:

  • Be prepared to talk to your child about his/her strengths and areas for growth
  • Understand this is the time for your child to take the lead and demonstrate their learning

During the conference:

  • Use the language with which you are most comfortable
  • Be an active listener
  • Be present (no mobile telephones, emails, texts)
  • Avoid critiquing, instead focus on the successes and new learning
  • Ask questions of your child using stems such as “What did you learn from….?”, or “Why did you do it this way…?” or “How was the learning challenging for you…?”
  • Be mindful that what might seem small to you, might be a huge accomplishment for your child
  • If your child seems nervous or shy, give them time and/or ask guiding questions about they work they are showing you
  • If you want to take photos, please wait until the end of the conference

After the conference:

  • Talk with your child about the conference and develop a plan to implement any strategies that were discussed during the conference
  • Remember to periodically check-in with your child regarding progress toward his/her goals

Concerns Over Social Media – “Challenges”
As a part of our on-going counseling program in the elementary school, we educate students on the potential dangers of accessing sites that make them feel scared and/or uncomfortable.  We teach students to report to parents or a trusted adult if they come across a website or image that makes them feel bad, scared, or uncomfortable. A recent trend on social media has been presenting “challenges” to children that might not be appropriate.  Please be aware of what your children are viewing on their devices and have proactive conversations with them. If you have any questions about this, please contact one of our counselors.
