Catalyst for Change – TEDx @ISB
Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents,

‘Ideas worth spreading’ is the TED organization’s vision and goal which was more than met on Thursday night when 8 amazing students presented their TEDx talks to an enthralled audience in the Culture Centre Theater (CCT).  I was absolutely amazed at the maturity, poise, delivery, substance, and emotion shared in the TEDx talks shared on Thursday night by our Grade 11 students.

Brilliantly hosted by two Juniors Nolie Giles and Thomas Bulow, the audience was treated to thoughtful, evocative and challenging speeches or ‘talks’ that covered individuality, community service, environmental ignorance, mental health awareness, second language learning, teenage rebellion, imitation and apathy, the case for reading and simulation. The audience was also treated to what will become a viral Slam Poem – ‘Welcome to my World’ by Maggie Chao and Tana Martin and two exceptional musical performances by VOX.

You can read more about the ISB story and long-standing involvement with TEDxYouth talks by visiting our website here. Congratulations to this years TEDx Talk finalists:

Madison Metha, Craig Dawe, Fizza Mobin, Yeonie Heo, Xuan Fan Loo, Montawan (Nae Nae) Chairatchaneeboon, Tatarit (Mod) Yensuang and Annata Tantiwongse.

Looking ahead:

AP Exam Sign-up
Susan Canobie
susanca@isb.ac.th

Over the next two weeks student sign-up for Advance Placement (AP) exams which take place this coming May.

If students are currently taking  the IB Math SL2/AP Calculus course at ISB they are expected to sign up and take the AP Calculus AB exam.  For students in IB Math HL2, they have been prepared for the AP Calculus AB exam and they have been partially prepared for the majority of the AP Calculus BC exam, and with a little extra individual work on their part, can be fully prepared for this BC exam.  Please note, the CollegeBoard stipulates that students cannot take both the Calculus AB and BC exams in the same year.  Any students in other ISB Math classes are not prepared by ISB and we recommend they do not take the AP math exams.

Students should collect an AP exam form and information from Ms. Canobie’s secretary, Khun Mook. They must then see their counselor to discuss the workload implications of taking these exams.

Registration for AP exams must be handed into the Dean of Academics office no later than Friday 1st February.

For All HS Families: If you are thinking or are curious about Australia as a destination for university, we invite you to attend a short information session next Tuesday, January 22nd, starting at Lunch (10:55am). Ms. Tamra Keating, Director of Marketing and Advancement at the International House of the University of Melbourne, will be visiting Bangkok on University business and reached out to us earlier this week to see if she could provide any service to the ISB Community. We accepted Ms. Keating’s gracious offer to do a short presentation on higher education in Australia for our families. Following that, she will do a brief information session on the University of Melbourne, widely viewed as one of the most esteemed research universities in the world. If you want to learn more about higher education in Australia and/or the University of Melbourne, please join us in the MPB2 on Tuesday!

For G10 Students: ISB will offer Grade 10 students, free of charge, the opportunity to take the PSAT 10 on April 23rd, 2019.  The PSAT is an excellent practice tool for students preparing to take the SAT in Grade 11.  Although the PSAT is excellent practice in preparation for the SAT, ISB understands not all students need the SAT for college entrance.  Therefore, the PSAT 10 will be optional (OPT IN) for Grade 10 students.  The OPT IN form was given to Grade 10 students on January 10th.  This form will be due on February 1st, 2019.  February 1st is a FIRM deadline because ISB needs to order the correct number of tests. The form should be turned in to the College Counseling Office.  Forms are also available in the College Counseling Office should you need another one. ISB suggests students take the SAT for the first time no earlier than December of G11.  For more information about the PSAT and SAT, go to the College Board website at https://www.collegeboard.org/

All schedule changes/adjustments have been completed for the second semester and hopefully your sons and daughters are all set for a productive second semester.  Ask your students how they are organizing their assignments, what is their mode of preparation?  GCW is right around the corner; are your students excited about the trip? Your son / daughters chaperone should be reaching out to you in this next week with any updates or further information.

Safeguarding and Consent – Life beyond ISB

Parents expect their children’s’ school to give them the academic skills to succeed in university and life, but what about the skills to manage the social demands that they face in feeling good about themselves and making smart decisions about friends and relationships?  ISB strives to impart the additional skills our students need to survive “life beyond ISB” from PreK to Grade 12 – setting boundaries and fully understanding consent. We feel that learning these skills is every bit as important to a healthy, fulfilling future.  So how do we promote learning about safety, consent and boundaries at ISB?  Come find out!  We’ll have two sessions (same content, repeated) on Wednesday, January 23rd, in the MPB 1, 8:00-9:00 AM or 6:00-7:00 PM

A few phrases to promote Growth Mindset

A buzz topic in education in the last several years has been “Growth Mindset” V “Fixed Mindset”. We hope that our students keep practicing habits that enhance a positive view on personal growth, being able to take some risks and recognizing the value of failure at times. Here are a few links on the topic and also a chart on how to potentially redirect our self-talk.

Career Fair 10:50-11:20 Thursday, January 24 CCT Foyer

Join us in the CCT Foyer Thursday, January 24 during the high school lunch for the 2nd Annual Pathways Career Fair (open to grades 9-12). Students will have an opportunity to meet nearly thirty career representatives face to face. Free food and drink will be provided so swing by to check it out!

“I just wanted to say thank you for the door that this event gave me into the the sports management industry, and how I wouldn’t have been able to make the steps that I have without that support.”

Gian Chansrichawala, Class of 2018

“I just want to thank you for organizing the event today because I was able to find an area and career option that I could pursue. As a student studying Geography it has been hard to find a job that will work with my interests but today I was able to find something of great interest. It makes me a lot less scared for the options ahead and now I am also eager to learn more about the organization. Thanks again!”

Olivia Scott, Class of 2018
