‘News, News and more News’
Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents,

Thank you to the 30 or so parents who joined us on Thursday morning for an interactive workshop on Assessment and Grading at ISB. Parents in attendance were able to learn about the differences between formative and summative assessments, understand ISB’s 7-1 grading scale, see some sample assessments and review transcripts and grades on Powerschool.

Susan Canobie (Dean of Academics) was ably supported by Gaby Geneser (Head of World Languages), Fraser Carver (Geography and World Studies teacher), Mike Rutherford (HS Librarian/Ed Tech Coordinator) and Khun Arisa (Powerschool guru). If you would like to see the slide show from the meeting you can view it by clicking here.

Speaking of meetings and news, there is a HS PTA meeting on Monday December 3rd at 9.30am in the Literary Lounge (in the MS/HS Library). Topics covered will include

  • College Counselor update including news on Cialfo (new platform)
  • School Counselor update including news on recent FCD visit and ‘vaping’
  • GCW news
  • Laptop update (new laptops coming…)
  • Technology use (2018 vs 2008)
  • Mock Exams (how to support students)
  • New School Uniforms

See you there!
Regards
Justin Alexander
High School Principal

Semester December Exams
Susan Canobie
susanca@isb.ac.th

Please find the link to the Dec. Exam Schedule here.  Exams are for Grade 9 & 10 English, Social Studies, Science and Math and for any student who takes a non-IB world language class.  Note, Grade 9 and 10 students, and will NOT be in classes from Thursday Dec. 6- 12.  Dec. 12 is an Assessment & Grading day, noting there are no Grade 9 & 10 classes.  In addition, world language classes will not continue during this exam period.  All other Grade 11 and 12 classes will continue as usual.  Individual student exam schedules have been placed in PowerSchool on the QuickLookup.

Students wishing to leave campus during exam days will need to complete the Early Departure Permission Form and have it signed and submitted to the High School Office.

Please also review this information letter outlining the final weeks of school in December.

Second Semester Course Choices
Susan Canobie
susanca@isb.ac.th

Second semester is not too far away.  Students who are considering changing their course choices for
second semester should see their counselor in the next week.  This is particularly relevant with choices of
Science courses in Grades 9 & 10.  If students have any questions, please contact their counselor.

We wrapped up Freshman Seminar last week.  We have enjoyed working with your 9th grader/s.  Our last session included final exam study tips and any questions students had regarding the exam schedule.

Important:  If your family will move at the end of your student’s 9th grade year, please ask the school you might move to (if you know) what their science requirements are.  In the past, we have had students take Chemistry 2 instead of Biology 1 or Physics 1 second semester.  This is because many schools (especially in the USA) require Chemistry a full year in Grade 9.  The master schedule is tight and while there is not a lot of flexibility for movement to accommodate changed electives, we will certainly do our best to accommodate your student’s needs.

It is a stressful time for our students as they prepare for their upcoming exams.  Please encourage your child to eat healthy, sleep plenty, and relax/enjoy friends and family when possible over the next few weeks.
