by Dennis Harter
dennish@isb.ac.th

Once each semester, MS administration host our Principal’s Forum to address concerns and/or questions from our parents. The questions are submitted to a reprensentative parent group who then pass along the questions to our Admin team.

We will host the semester 1 Principal’s Forum on Tuesday, November 6th at 9:00 AM in MPB 3.

Thank you to parents who submitted questions as well as the PTA coordinators and team who discussed and shared them with us.

Kindness shines this week in the Middle School

This week, throughout the middle school, we engaged in Kindness Week. Kicked off with an assembly on Monday, MS students shared the community and personal benefits of being kind.

The theme of the week was #JustSayHi and we saw the power of simple greetings to lift mood, improve health, and foster community. Throughout the week, students and teachers greeted each other more often and more personally and the smiles were noticeable.

On Tuesday, students each received the name of another student in the grade and they were given a task as “Secret Change Agents” to secretly deliver a nice note, provide a surprise treat on days in the rest of the week. Today, the students shared who they were to their secret recipients in a fun culminating “Reveal party.”

It was wonderful to see the kindness catch on and spread throughout the students and teachers. Students were really into the secret deliveries of kindness and we’ve had a wonderful spirit throughout the week, that we are confident will continue to represent us for the remainder of the year.

Moustaches for Men’s Health Awareness in November

 by Dennis Harter
MS Principal

If you find yourself on campus this month, you may notice an unusual trend of moustache growing amongst some of the male teachers of ISB. That’s because it’s “MO-vember” – a global movement to promote awareness around men’s health issues through the noticeable and conversation-starting growing of moustaches.

Unfortunately, data and experience shows that men rarely talk about or seek information or support for physical or mental health issues. Our goal in growing the moustaches is to bring shed light on this and model that talking about our health is both smart and better for our well-being.

Consider this worrisome fact:

70% of men say their friends can rely on them for support, but only 48% say that they rely on their friends. In other words: we’re here for our friends, but worried about asking for help for ourselves. Reaching out is crucial.

You are certainly invited to join us by growing a moustache yourself. Be assured, that mine will look as bad as anyone’s!

Even if you don’t “grow the mo’,” we hope that you will support encouraging the positives of open communication – let’s get rid of the stigma associated with men talking about mental or physical health issues. We can model for our young people what care and community and healthy conversation could look like.

And whatever your involvement, be on the look out for some impressive moustaches! They’ll be hard to miss!

There are leagues for boys and girls ages 4 yrs – 18 yrs.  Please note registration is open from now until November 2nd.  Current fees per player are THB 3,600.  Registration fees will increase to THB 4,100 on November 3rd (if there is space in our program) so be sure to register before that date.

You can make your payment at the Community Activity Office (CAO) or pay by Thai bank wire transfer.  Cash, credit cards and Thai baht checks are accepted for payment at the CAO office.  The CAO Office is open Monday – Friday, 7:00AM to 11:00AM and 12:00PM to 3:00PM.

Player assessment will be held on Sunday November 4th at the ISB fields.  All players are strongly encouraged to attend their assessment sessions to allow the coaches to create fair and balanced teams.   See the attached assessment schedule.

Opening Day for baseball/softball is on Saturday, Nov 17th.  All games are played on Friday evenings and Saturdays at ISB.  Games will continue every weekend until the league championships the weekend of February 22nd/23rd.  There will be no games during the winter break at ISB but we will continue play on Saturday, January 5th 2019.  The game schedule will be published approximately one week before the season begins.

Practices will begin the week of Nov 5th.   All teams will practice once per week during the season as a weekly practice is important to skills development and to learn the fundamentals of teamwork, etc.  We have arranged a downtown Bangkok location for an optional Sunday practice at NIST.  Parents will have to pay THB 1,000 for the season for this practice because NIST charges for field usage.

On the registration form you will also have an opportunity to volunteer to be a coach, assistant coach or team parent.  Please consider helpng out with your child’s team in some way.  The kids really love having their parents helping out with their team and you will have a great time.  No previous baseball experience is necessary.

BBSA has purchased a limited number of fielding gloves for players who need them.  These will be sold on our assessment day.
