September 19th 2018 ‘Short week’
Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents,

I am pretty confident that your children are excited about the short school week this week and being able to recharge and reenergize themselves after a busy start to the school year. Our teachers too are looking forward to a short break as well, although it will not start until Thursday afternoon as our teaching faculty will be in school Thursday participating in a Professional Learning Day.

As we look forward to this mini break it was wonderful to come together earlier today for our Hands and Hearts Peace day in our upgraded Rajendra gym. The new ‘Jumbotron’ screen and improved acoustics in the Gym ensured that our assembly was a great experience for all of our ISB students. Do ask your children about the assembly and maybe ask them to sing the song that the whole school sang together today. After the long weekend, we start our Spirit Week with special dress-up days and activities during lunchtimes and after school. Spirit week concludes with Black and Gold day and Spirit night. More details are shared later in the ENews.

Have a wonderful weekend and Go Panthers.

Regards
Justin Alexander
High School Principal

GCW Registration Opens Next Week for Sophomores and Freshman!
Andy Vanughan
andyv@isb.ac.th

We have now successfully received registrations for our Seniors and Juniors and next week we will open registrations for Grade 9 & 10 as follows:

Sophomores:
Opens Monday 24 September 7.00pm
Closes Tuesday 25 September 11.30am

Freshman:
Opens Thursday 27 September 7.00pm
Closes Tuesday 28 September 11.30am

Our Freshman students will also have a chance to learn more about the program in their Freshman Seminar next week on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It is very important that prior to your child registering, you have conversations with them that clearly limit the cost of trips you are willing to pay. If students move courses after they are placed, they will be moved to in-Thailand, lower cost courses.

Please find here the link to the GCW Booklet for 2018-19

Finally, we aim to have all students placed on courses by October 3, on which date we will release placements and final costs for courses. It is important to note that any change of course after this point needs to take place by Thursday October 4.

For any questions, please email Mr. Vaughan directly at: andyv@isb.ac.th

Registration for IB Exams and payments for these exams for the May 2018 session are coming up
Susan Canobie
susanca@isb.ac.th

All Grade 12 and some Grade 11 students will receive their IB exam registrations and associated invoices next week.  Parents and students are asked to check the course registration forms carefully, both for personal details and IB courses.  Students who are completing the second year in any IB course are expected to complete the course by sitting the IB examination, as detailed in our HS Program of Studies. Universities also expect students completing an IB program or course to have fulfilled all assessment requirements of the course, of which the examination is the culminating assessment.

Please note that invoices are payable to the cashier on Monday October 10.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Overall Grade-to-date

If you have not already done so, please check PowerSchool for the first HAL update in each of your child’s subjects.  This is an assessment on the Habits & Attitudes to Learning and the rubric can be found in the Student Daily Planner.  Teachers will update PowerSchool on Friday September 28 with a Grade-to-date and HAL Grade for all students.  This Grade-to-date is a ‘snapshot’ of where students currently stand academically and is on the 7-1 scale, based on the ‘body of evidence’ of student work completed so far, with teachers using the Grade Descriptors and their professional judgement.  For your reference, the Grade Descriptors can be found inside the back cover of the Student Daily Planner.

Freedom from Chemical Dependency will be on campus from October 9-11, meeting with our high school students.  FCD is the leading international provider of school based substance abuse prevention programs.  FCD works worldwide to provide students and the adults who care for them with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to make intelligent and healthy choices about alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.

You are cordially invited to attend a meeting with FCD on Thursday, October 11 from 8:30-9:30am in MPB1.  The FCD specialist will answer your questions, either general ones about drug and alcohol trends in the U.S. and international schools around the world, or about their impressions of the challenges that our own students face in terms of the personal choices they face here in Nichada and in greater Bangkok.  Please come!

For the coming days, we hope students enjoy this activity free long weekend and spend time with family and friends as well as catch up on any work, and maybe a bit of sleep!

Thailand Cross Country Invitational  – Recap

ISB hosted another memorable cross country event last weekend in the hills of Kanchanaburi, this year featuring twelve of the top international schools from around Asia. Our biggest event yet, this year’s Thailand Cross Country Invitational proved to be uber competitive and more fun than ever for the participating athletes.

With the rain hammering down for most of the weekend, the course was a muddy mess – just what the doctor ordered for extra physical challenge and the development of mental toughness. Our ISB boys team displayed their grit and determination, blistering the competition despite the downpour. Will Condra finished second overall, closely followed by Julian John in 3rd place. Aidan Wiktorowicz snatched 11th overall out of the 98 runners. Dalton Lazich was ISB’s 4th runner and freshman Will Melhorn cemented the Panthers’ championship by securing 34th. The British International School of Phuket finished second and SAS (Singapore) earned the bronze in the team competition.

The ISB girls brought their competitive fire to this year’s event and impressed everyone improved performance, intensity, and team spirit. The Panthers finished sixth overall in a stacked field of eleven teams.  Lieve Olufsen placed as ISB’s top runner, coming in 16th place. Ninth grader Kate Hansberry continued her rapid ascent, finishing second amongst the team, and Kana, Yumi and Yui rounded out the scoring top five. Coach Giles and the rest of the girls team left satisfied with their growth and performance yet hungry for more. With BISAC coming up and a few weeks to prepare for IASAS, the team’s future looks bright!

Pictures of the event can be found here, THAI XC 18 PHOTOS, compliments of the ISB marketing department.
