September 7th 2018 ‘We are Open’
Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Dear parents,

Thank you once again for your involvement and interest in your child’s education here at ISB. We hosted our Open house just last evening where many of you had a chance to follow your son or daughter’s schedule and meet their inspirational teachers. Attendance was great and our teachers really appreciated the opportunity to share with you the learning that takes place in the classroom every day.

Our Open house came hot on the heels of a very well attended HS PTA meeting (nearly 90 parents) on Wednesday morning where details about Global Citizenship Week, how to access powerschool, upcoming highlights of our Arts and Activities programs were all shared along with a presentation by one of our 10th grade students who is passionate about animation. You can click on the link here to access the presentation from the meeting. Please keep a close look out for upcoming events on the fields, on the courts and in our theatres and performing spaces. Go Panthers.

Regards
Justin Alexander

GCW Registration Opens Next Week for Seniors!
Andy Vanughan
andyv@isb.ac.th

Today we will be releasing the Global Citizenship Week (GCW) Course booklet for courses offered in February 2019. Registration for Global Citizenship Week courses begins Thursday, 13 Sept at 7:00pm for Seniors and for Juniors this opens on Monday 17 Sept at 7:00pm.

It is very important that prior to your child registering, you have conversations with them that clearly limit the cost of trips you are willing to pay. If students move courses after they are placed, they will be moved to in-Thailand, lower cost courses.

Please find here the link to the GCW Booklet for 2018-19

For any questions, please email Mr. Vaughan directly at: andyv@isb.ac.th

HAL Grades
Susan Canobie
susanca@isb.ac.th

Please note that faculty have added HAL Grades for each subject on PowerSchool on Friday September 7. At ISB, students are assessed in two distinct areas: i) in relation to stated learning standards using an 7-1 grade descriptor and ii) in relation to their approach to learning using a 7-1 number grade. We call this second area the Habits and Attitudes to Learning or HAL grade. This grade gives students and parents an indication of dispositions of students as they develop the characteristics of growth and learning. Please keep in mind that in most classes, there will be only one or two completed assessments at this time of year. Also note, the HAL grade is not part of the academic achievement grade. You will find a copy of the HAL assessment criteria here. If you have any questions regarding this assessment, I encourage you to contact the teacher directly.  The first overall academic achievement grade will be posted on September 28.

College Counselors
Stephan Golas
stephang@isb.ac.th
We have seen a marked uptick in the number of students we are seeing as we move closer and closer to university application deadlines in North America, Thailand, Hong Kong, and other places around the world. If you are a senior, please make sure you are coming by to meet with your College Counselor!

It was great to see over 120 of our parents at our first College Counseling Coffee this past Wednesday. As promised, we are including a copy of that presentation – a general overview on College Counseling at ISB – here in the eNews. As a reminder, we have a number of important events coming up in the next few weeks – please make sure you check the College Counseling Google Calendar for updated college visits and events! Next week, Seniors applying to the United States have their Common Application Workshop on Monday during Panther Block in MPB1 while Juniors and their Parents have the Junior College Night on Wednesday night in the Chevron; the following week, everyone in the high school is invited to ISB’s World University Fair on Wednesday, the 19th, in Rajendra Gym from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Please check your email, too, for a message from Ms. McDowell about other college and university fair opportunities at ISB and in Bangkok!

School Counselors News
Kevin Callahan
kevinc@isb.ac.th

The school counselors have been meeting with new students over the past couple of weeks.  We have been reminded that they are still in the midst of transitioning.  This can be both an exciting and unsettling time for them as they are missing friends and all things familiar.  Not to be forgotten, it can also be a time of transition for the “stayers” – the students who have returned to ISB, but have had to say goodbye to good friends recently.  Please keep this in mind and check in with your child.  We will continue to monitor and support them through this important transition.

We’re meeting also with our 9th graders and we’re generally pleased to see that they’re transitioning nicely to high school.  We’re trying to promote that students can manage their time most efficiently by getting into a regular routine of a balance of study, relaxation, technology, and sleep.  The benefits of good time management (and the challenges of improving those skills!) should become apparent as the teachers begin assessing students’ progress in their classes.  How well-organized is your student?

ISB Hosts the Annual Massed Band Festival
Anthony Giles
anthonyg@isb.ac.th

This year ISB hosts the annual Massed Band Festival event that will take place on the ISB campus on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7th and 8th.  Up to 200 students from 10 schools will gather in the Chevron Theatre to rehearse with our guest conductor for this year’s event, Mr. Gary Gillett.  Gary is the retired director of bands from Missoula Sentinel High School in Missoula, Mt. USA and brings over 40 years of experience and knowledge as a festival adjudicator, conductor of honor bands and city municipal bands.  He is a wonderful music educator/author that will work very well with our students to provide a positive musical environment.  Schools from Northern and Southern Thailand as well as Malaysia will be joining us for this year’s festival to create a truly international event.  Don’t miss the Gala Concert when the Massed Band will be performing the best of wind band music at 2 pm in the Chevron Theatre on Saturday, the 8th of September.  Admission is free and all are invited!

Regards,
Anthony Giles
