High School Upcoming events (Please click):

August 31st ‘What’s on’

Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents,

Thank you in advance for your involvement and your attendance at a number of High School Parent events that are due to take place over the next week or so. A major event that took place this week was the Senior College night held on Wednesday night, where our experienced College Counselling team (Mr. Golas, Ms. McDowell, Ms. Melton and Mr. Weiser) explained the University College counseling process at ISB to a large and interested crowd of Seniors and their parents. The College Counselors will be conducting regular morning coffees throughout the year that are relevant for all High School Parents with the first one taking place on Wednesday at 8 am. You can find more details further down the ENews.

The first HS PTA meeting takes place on Wednesday, September 5th at 9.30am in MPB 3. After a welcome from our friendly HS PTA representatives Vartika Bawa and Ginny Condra our Agenda will consist of these items:

  • Meet the new Deputy Head of School Mrs. Debi Caskey
Learning Attributes – What are they?
  • Meet the College Counsellors
  • Powerschool – How to access look for grades etc
  • Global Citizenship Week (GCW) news
  • Scheduling classes and class changes
  • Upcoming dates and more

The HS Open House takes place on Thursday, September 6th starting at 6 pm sharp. Registration begins at 5.30pm outside the Chevron where parents can collect their child’s schedule and details about the evening before joining us in the Chevron for a welcome and to receive instructions about the evening. This is a great opportunity for parents to learn more about the curriculum, units of work, assessments and learning opportunities that your children experience in their classes. Please be reminded that the Open House is not a parent-teacher conference, so if you have specific questions about your child’s progress etc, please contact the teacher to make arrangements to meet/talk at another time.

Have a great week and see you around campus this week.

Regards
Justin Alexander
High School Principal

Attendance & GuardianshipRepeat Notice
Andy Vanughan
andyv@isb.ac.th

If your child is sick and unable to attend school, we ask that parents inform the High School Office by 8am so that we are able to inform teachers of their absence.

For absences that are planned in advance or for extended absences, please email Andy Vaughan and Khun Gade regarding these. We also understand that there are situations where both parents are required to travel. In such situations a guardian must be nominated who can look after your child and a temporary Guardianship Form needs to be filled out and sent to the school. You can the Temporary Guardianship Form form from this link.

Here are a few more helpful reminders regarding attendance:

  • Students who have their first block free can arrive at school after first block so long as they are in time for their first scheduled class of the day.
  • Students who have a free during the day are not allowed to leave campus except in the case of a pre-arranged appointment in this time. In such cases a signed note or email must be received. Please note we are unable to allow verbal confirmation on a phone in such cases.
  • Students who have the last block of the day free are allowed to leave early at 1pm so long as a signed note or email has been received from parents.

Mandatory Study Hall (MSH) Repeat Notice
Andy Vanughan
andyv@isb.ac.th

Mandatory Study Hall is assigned in cases where a student has not completed work in a subject; the consequence for not doing your homework is simply ‘to do your homework’.

Here’s a quick summary of MSH:

  1. MSHnow runs from 2.30-3.30pm (Early Dismissal starts at 1.15pm)
  2. If assigned MSHyour child must attend for a minimum of 30 minutes
  3. If your child has HL, this takes precedence over MSH, however your child still must attend for a minimum of 30 minutes if assigned (3.00-3.30pm).

Please find a link to the MSH process so that you can better understand the process here: MSH Process Chart. Please note students assigned to do MSH are required to attend for a minimum of 30 minutes.

All students who are assigned MSH should be told by their teacher verbally and receive an email notification by 2.00pm on the day of MSH.

Schedule changes
Susan Canobie
susanca@isb.ac.th

Student schedules are now settling and further changes must include a signed schedule change form, which students can obtain from their Counselor.

Schedule changes may still occur up to week 5 of the Semester (Sep. 14th) if recommended by the Student Support Team or the Classroom teacher believes the student is in the wrong level (eg. HL to SL, Spanish III to Spanish II).  This change does not appear on the student transcript. Up to the 10th week (Oct. 19), if there is a schedule change due to the above situations, the change can occur, but the original course will be placed on the student transcript with a Withdraw Pass (WP) or Withdraw Fail (WF) dependent on the student grade at that point.  Beyond this period there can be no schedule changes.

This is all clearly explained in the Student Handbook on page 54.

College Counselors
Stephan Golas
stephang@isb.ac.th

It was great to see over 225 of our Seniors and their parents this past week at Senior College Night: we look forward to working with you all as we move through the next several months of application season with you! All Seniors should schedule their Senior Conference with their college counselor as soon as possible. And please note that the Common Application Workshop is on Monday, September 10th during Panther Block!

Soon, we will be sending an email to all students and parents about college and university fair opportunities coming up throughout Bangkok – there are several in September and October, so be sure to check your inbox! These fairs are in addition to the two we will host on ISB’s campus and the many new workshops and presentations we informed you about last week. We have two events next week: on Tuesday, at 1:30pm in the Literary Lounge, “Rankings and Majors: What to Think About” will explore how to thoughtfully approach college rankings and choosing a major; on Wednesday, at 8:00am before the PTA Meeting, we will host our first College Counseling Coffee of the year in MPB1, where will will provide an overview of the College Counseling program at ISB for any new families to ISB (though not-so-new families to ISB are also welcome to attend!).
