ISB Perception Study: Thank you and Update

By: Shelley Bragg, Director of Marketing, Communications and Alumni
shelleyb@isb.ac.th

We would like to thank those that took part in our Perception Study with IMPACT Marketing International. The feedback and insight we gained from this process has been extremely helpful and will help to guide our future marketing efforts, but also our school development in the coming years.

Deborah Kriger and her team at IMPACT Marketing are currently drafting the final report that will be shared with the Leadership Team and with the Board of Trustees in August. We will then summarize and share the findings with the community, with the opportunity for an open meeting and a Q&A in September.

The Perception Study is simply one way that we aim to gather feedback from our community. We would like to remind you that we also have our annual survey, which will be coming out this week. We encourage you to please take the time to complete this survey as well. The questions are more specific to key programs and your input is incredibly helpful.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Visit the Great and Good Friend Exhibition

By: Shelley Bragg, Director of Marketing, Communications and Alumni
shelleyb@isb.ac.th

The Great and Good Friends Exhibition celebrates 200 years of Thai and U.S. friendship. It is running until the end of June at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles. Given ISB’s history, having opened on the grounds of U.S. Embassy in 1951, we would like to organize a special visit for members of the ISB community to the exhibition within the next two weeks.

Should you be interested in joining this visit, please email me: shelleyb@isb.ac.th

The Netflix series 13 Reasons Why Season 2 is now available for viewing

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Netflix series 13 Reasons Why Season 2 is now available for viewing. Last year we shared our concerns about season 1, which many students watched without adult knowledge or presence. Like season 1, season 2 deals with mature themes, including a suicide, self-harm, date rape, bullying and harassment, alcohol and drug use, and extreme violence. The intense, graphic portrayal of these difficult issues involving youth present both the risk of triggering harmful behaviors among some vulnerable youth and the opportunity for adults to engage in meaningful and supportive discussions with youth about these issues.

We encourage you to talk with your children about the show and, if they are going to watch it, to do so with them. While Netflix has added more safeguards to the series, these are not a substitute for adult involvement. A consortium of education and mental health organizations has created an online toolkit with guidance, talking points and other resources specific to the series and issues portrayed https://www.13reasonswhytoolkit.org/parents.

The following guidance for families from the National Association of School Psychologists also may help you support your children:

  • Ask your child[ren] if they have heard about or seen the series 13 Reasons Why. While we don’t recommend that they be encouraged to view the series, do tell them you want to watch it with them or to catch up, and discuss their thoughts.

  • Be willing and prepared to engage in conversations about these issues with your child[ren], including asking if they have witnessed or experienced any of the circumstances portrayed, what their thoughts and feelings are, and how they think adults could help.

  • Listen to your children’s comments without judgment. Doing so requires that you fully concentrate, understand, respond, and then remember what is being said. Put your own agenda aside.

  • If they exhibit any of the warning signs [below], don’t be afraid to ask if they have thought about suicide or if someone is hurting them. Raising the issue of suicide does not increase the risk or plant the idea. On the contrary, it creates the opportunity to offer help.

  • Ask your child[ren] if they think any of their friends or classmates exhibit warning signs. Talk with them about how to seek help for their friend or classmate. Guide them on how to respond when they see or hear any of the warning signs.

  • Get help from a school-employed or community-based mental health professional if you are concerned for your child’s safety or the safety of one of their peers.

Some of the warning signs that an individual, even a child, is in emotional distress or thinking about suicide are:

  • Direct (“I am going to kill myself”) or indirect (“I wish things would stop”) threats of suicide, both verbal and in writing.  Many of these threats are made online or using social media.

  • Giving away prized possessions.

  • Dramatic change in eating or sleeping habits (either too much or too little).

  • Withdrawal and isolation from friends and family.

  • Changes in behavior, appearance, hygiene, thoughts, or feelings.  A person who typically is sad and suddenly is very happy or at ease is a warning sign.

All warning signs should be taken seriously. If you are concerned about your child, please contact their school counselor or a school psychologist. School counselors and psychologists are also happy to share information about mental health resources in Bangkok. The ISB School Psychologists maintain the Bangkok Community Resources website.  In an emergency, you should go directly to an emergency room.

School counselors and psychologists are available if you have any questions about how to support your children. Thank you for partnering with us to support the social-emotional health and wellbeing of our students.

Sincerely,

ISB Counseling Team

ISB Uniform Updates and Changes

By: Shelley Bragg, Director of Marketing, Communications and Alumni
shelleyb@isb.ac.th

After reviewing the feedback from the parent, student and staff surveys, we have learned that the overwhelming majority of our community would like to see changes in our uniform design, particularly with respect to the fabric and comfort of some items. There are some elements that the community are happy with and others that most respondents agree could be improved. We will be using all the feedback gathered to lead the redesign phase for our uniform.

We are planning to implement a new uniform in August of 2019, which means that next school year is likely to be the final year with our current uniform.

More information regarding the timeline and roll out of this uniform change will be provided in the beginning of next school year.

There will be an opportunity for students, parents and staff to be involved in the concept development within the new school year.

Thank you for your input and attention to this.

ISB Health Clinic: Health Forms Due by June 30th

By: Sally Plomley, Nurse Coordinator
nurse@isb.ac.th

It is the time of year when we need to start the medical screening process for ALL students.

We have modified the screening process so there is a basic medical screen for most students with a more extensive screen for students entering Grades 3, 6, 9 and 11, which includes a tuberculosis screen. Any student who has had a new student medical examination after January 2018 will not need a repeat examination. All students must fill in the Nurse Medication Consent form and Tuberculosis Symptom Screening form.

Forms are available for download from the ISB website here

Any student with Diabetes, Asthma or Anaphylaxis will also need an action plan filled out by the doctor. Theses action plans are available for download from the ISB website: ISB Health Services Forms and Resources.

If your child has regular medications that the nurse administers throughout the school day, please also get the Prescription Medication Consent form filled out.

ALL FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE HEALTH CLINIC BY JUNE 30 2018 either in person or via email nurse@isb.ac.th. Incomplete forms will not be accepted.
