Celebrating that Together we are better

by Dennis Harter
dennish@isb.ac.th

This week we celebrated our community in our annual Diversity Assembly. Completely student-run, students advocated for equal treatment of all and a community in which we didn’t live by stereotypes, but rather by care and respect an individuals uniqueness.

Throughout the assembly, performances, art, and speakers emphasized that our strength as a community came from celebrating our uniqueness together. That “together we are better,” not “the same we are better”.

Once again, I was filled with pride to see the strength of our students’ care for each other and the respect with which they want our community to interact. It is a wonderful day that encapsulates who we are together.

Well done middle school!

Bravo! to the cast and crew of Mulan

This week our community was treated to wonderful performances by our MS students of the stage production of Mulan. The performances showcased terrific acting and singing from a large cast of our MS students. They performed to sold out audiences throughout the week, culminating in a school-day performance for the Grade 6 & 7. In front of their peers, they shined!

Thank you to our wonderful adult directors: Peter Assimakopoulos, Merissa Bush, and Andy and Deanna Marshall who guided our students to their best performances. Thank you to our high school and parent volunteers who helped bring out the best for the show, supporting our cast and crew!

The performances were an inspiration and a joy to watch!

Bravo!

Repeat Announcement: One Day

On May 30th , Grade 6 & Grade 7 ISB MS students will be engaged in the first annual ISB Innovation Day (called One Day). ONE DAY is a great opportunity for our MS students to identify a passion/idea to focus on for an entire school day.

Besides being aligned with our school’s definition of learning, many other reasons make this a great opportunity.

  • It’s fun.
  • It fosters creativity and innovation
  • It gives kids a sense of ownership and voice.
  • It fosters intrinsic motivation.
  • It highlights talents and interests that don’t necessarily get revealed at school that often.
  • It’s a great place to develop 21st century skills like collaboration, problem-solving, and project management.

For the next few weeks during advisory, students will identify topics of their choice and brainstorm ideas to develop a product or project to complete for ONE DAY. Some possible projects include:

  • Make a Rube Goldberg machine.
  • Write a song and perform it
  • Write a piece of music and perform it
  • Write and performing a one-person comedy act or play
  • Write a short story and publish it
  • Write a children’s story and publish it
  • Create a podcast to tell a story for children
  • Create a podcast or movie about a science topic or experiment you tested
  • Create a podcast or movie on an important environmental issu
  • Create a new app.
  • Create a new board game
  • Create a new video game
  • Create a painting
  • Create a sculpture
  • Create a website to share or teach something educational
  • Sew or knit a handicraft for charity
  • Choreograph a new dance and perform it
  • Create a how-to tutorial on how to bake or cook a recipe
  • Build a model of the Eiffel Tower or other interesting landmark
  • Research and presenting on a topic your are passionate about

The final projects will be captured digitally and exhibited on our ONE DAY Google Site. We will share more information once we have uploaded all of the student work.

Students will be working on their projects in various venues throughout the day on Wednesday, May 30, so we invite you to visit and see what our amazing students create on this day! The next day, Thursday, May 31 in the morning, students will exhibit and showcase their work. Please come by this day as well. Also, if you are interested in mentoring our students in any of the above project ideas, please contact me via email for more information.

Repeat Annoucement: If You Know you are Leaving ISB

Families who are leaving ISB at the end of the school year are asked to inform the school as soon as possible using the official Notice of Withdrawal Form. This helps us prepare school records for your child and with planning for next year. Completed forms can be dropped off at the MS Office.
