MAP and ISA Testing – What you need to know

By: Graeme Scott, Deputy Head of School for Learning
graemes@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents,

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) and ISA (International Schools Assessment) assessments will be uploaded to Powerschool and will be available from Friday, 11th May.  To access these assessments, go to powerschool.isb.ac.th and log in with your username and password.  To open the document use the password in red on the screen once you login.  If you experience difficulty with logging in, please contact our Ed Tech department.

Please remember that we use many different types of assessment to measure student progress.  Most assessments of student learning are done by their teacher in a ‘normal’ classroom setting. MAP and ISA are two popular and well-researched external assessments but they are broad in nature (as they are designed not for specific schools, but for huge numbers of students across the globe), and they only assess some elements of what students learn here at ISB.  They are also administered in different conditions to those the students normally learn in. They represent one point of data in a much bigger discussion about student learning and progress.

You may have a chart at home on the wall, where you measure your child’s growth in height. In a similar way, these assessments measure growth in learning and, much the same as height, this growth is rarely regular and can happen in spurts. It is not practical for example, to expect regular, predictable learning growth each year.  That is not typically how children learn.  Equally, the higher the level achieved, the harder it is to demonstrate further progress in these assessments as the margins become narrower and our students can ‘top out’.  For this reason, we no longer administer MAP in grade 9. Only students in grades 3-8 take the MAP assessment and those in grades 3, 5, 7 and 10 take the ISA assessment.

Please complete the ISB Uniform Survey

By: Shelley Bragg, Director of Marketing, Communications and Alumni
shelleyb@isb.ac.th

We are currently reviewing the ISB school uniforms. The purpose of the review is to determine if we can improve the fabrics used, the style and fit of each item and to bring consistency of uniform policy across all school divisions. We are running a short survey and we will also be conducting focus groups, for those that are interested in providing more feedback. Your input is incredibly valuable in this process and we ask that you please take a few moments to complete this quick survey.

The survey will close on Monday, May 14th.

ISB Health Clinic: Annual Medical Screening For Students

By: Sally Plomley, Nurse Coordinator
nurse@isb.ac.th

It is the time of year when we need to start the medical screening process for ALL students.

We have modified the screening process so there is a basic medical screen for most students with a more extensive screen for students entering Grades 3, 6, 9 and 11, which includes a tuberculosis screen. Any student who has had a new student medical examination after January 2018 will not need a repeat examination. All students must fill in the Nurse Medication Consent form and Tuberculosis Symptom Screening form.

Forms are available for download from the ISB website here

Any student with Diabetes, Asthma or Anaphylaxis will also need an action plan filled out by the doctor. Theses action plans are available for download from the ISB website: ISB Health Services Forms and Resources.

If your child has regular medications that the nurse administers throughout the school day, please also get the Prescription Medication Consent form filled out.

ALL FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE HEALTH CLINIC BY JUNE 30 2018 either in person or via email nurse@isb.ac.th. Incomplete forms will not be accepted.

If you are attending a clinic you have not been to in the past you will also need your passport or Thai ID card. Many health insurance companies will cover annual medical screening for children.

The medicals examinations for students entering K and grades 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 12 can now be done at the Aetna Family Clinic Nichada (with referral to the hospital if there are any issues). They can also be done at World Medical Center or Samitivej Hospital. All students entering grades 3, 6, 9 and 11 will need to attend Bumrungrad Hospital, World Medical Center, Samitivej Hospital or any other hospital/doctors surgery with appropriate facilities. Please note that World Medical Center only have audiology services Tuesday 9am-5pm, Wednesday 5pm-8pm and Saturday 9am-5pm.

Packages have been negotiated with Aetna Family Clinic, Bumrungrad Hospital and World Medical Center as outlined below. Please note there may be additional fees required for equipment and if there are additional medical reviews or tests required due to abnormalities found during the examination. Backpack & suitcase donation request

By: Katie Bradfield
bradfield76@gmail.com

The Cub Scouts are collecting gently used small suitcases, sports bags or backpacks for a local orphanage. The Scouts will set up two drop-off points on Saturday, May 19, from 2 – 4 PM: one at the entrance to Nichada Plaza (near Villa) and the other next to 7-11. Please contact.

The Baan Poomwaet orphanage serves as a transition facility for young boys rescued from trafficking and other abusive situations. The boys stay at the facility anywhere from a couple of months up to a year before moving on to other government facilities. The suitcases/backpacks will be used for the boys when they are leaving so they will have a proper bag for their personal possessions rather than a plastic bag.
