shelleyb@isb.ac.th
We are excited and honored to announce the opening of Color Now, our student art exhibition at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) from May 1 – 13, 2018.
The exhibition brings together an exceptional selection of student work from pre-kindergarten through grade 12, taking advantage of a variety of visual mediums. It is a joyful celebration of diversity, creativity and color. It is the culmination one year’s worth of work by an extensive amount of students and staff at ISB. There are over 250 unique pieces being showcased.
BACC is the heart of Bangkok’s growing art scene and it features contemporary art, music, theatre, film, design and hosts cultural and educational events. Some exceptional artists have been on display there and it is a phenomenal opportunity for our students, and our school, to have work showcased on BACC walls. For more information about the BACC please visit their website: http://en.bacc.or.th/. For more information about the exhibition, please visit: www.isb.ac.th/colornow
The exhibition will be open to the public for the first two weeks of May 1st to the 13th.

ISB Health Clinic: Annual Medical Screening For Students
By: Sally Plomley, Nurse Coordinator
nurse@isb.ac.th
It is the time of year when we need to start the medical screening process for ALL students.
We have modified the screening process so there is a basic medical screen for most students with a more extensive screen for students entering Grades 3, 6, 9 and 11, which includes a tuberculosis screen. Any student who has had a new student medical examination after January 2018 will not need a repeat examination. All students must fill in the Nurse Medication Consent form and Tuberculosis Symptom Screening form.
Forms are available for download from the ISB website here.
Any student with Diabetes, Asthma or Anaphylaxis will also need an action plan filled out by the doctor. Theses action plans are available for download from the ISB website: ISB Health Services Forms and Resources.
If your child has regular medications that the nurse administers throughout the school day, please also get the Prescription Medication Consent form filled out.
ALL FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE HEALTH CLINIC BY JUNE 30 2018 either in person or via email nurse@isb.ac.th. Incomplete forms will not be accepted.

If you are attending a clinic you have not been to in the past you will also need your passport or Thai ID card. Many health insurance companies will cover annual medical screening for children.
The medicals examinations for students entering K and grades 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 12 can now be done at the Aetna Family Clinic Nichada (with referral to the hospital if there are any issues). They can also be done at World Medical Center or Samitivej Hospital. All students entering grades 3, 6, 9 and 11 will need to attend Bumrungrad Hospital, World Medical Center, Samitivej Hospital or any other hospital/doctors surgery with appropriate facilities. Please note that World Medical Center only have audiology services Tuesday 9am-5pm, Wednesday 5pm-8pm and Saturday 9am-5pm.
Packages have been negotiated with Aetna Family Clinic, Bumrungrad Hospital and World Medical Center as outlined below. Please note there may be additional fees required for equipment and if there are additional medical reviews or tests required due to abnormalities found during the examination. Cafeteria News: Did You Know….how we create our menus?
By: ISB Cafeteria
cafeteria@isb.ac.th
Did you ever wander into the cafeteria to grab a bite to eat, or take a peek at the Elementary School online menu, and ask yourself, I wonder how the menus are created? Food is a language of the world, a common ground where we can all come together. And yet, it is also something extremely personal, each one of us attaching a certain meaning to it and enjoying an array of different tastes which are often not the same as that of our neighbor in line. As a School Caterer our aim is to walk a middle line and hold our arms out wide to create balance as we serve over 60 different nationalities and cultures, all with differing needs and requests. Over 1,700 meals are served throughout 2 cafeterias daily.
In order to achieve this balance, we put our focus in 6 areas: 1) Dietary & Religious requirements, 2) Quality & Health, 3) Scope of Service, 4) Cost, 5) Balance & Variety, and last but certainly not least is 6) the Environment. We cater to all dietary concerns as Vegetarian, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, and Egg Free on a daily basis in both cafeterias. Our campus is nut free, therefore this consideration is automatic.
So what are some examples of choices we make given these considerations when we put them into action? The 100% organic rice served in Elementary School is one example. Given the fact that: 1) rice is consumed daily by just about 99% of all students in the Elementary School, and 2) that most of Thailand is covered in rice agriculture, we know putting our resources into this area has an extremely wide and positive impact for our health, scope of service, dietary requirement, the environment and local communities. This choice ticks all of 5 out of the 6 focus points mentioned above. It is an absolute win/win. On the same token, when asked if another organic or superior ingredient at a higher cost could also be added with less impact, we chose to remain focused on the former in consideration of balance. A second example is with the elimination of beef from the weekly menus. Beef, which is raised and prepared for mass consumption, only ticks 1 of the 6 factors above, which is variety, therefore it has been removed because of the large scale negative impact it has all around on health and environment when looking at mass farming.
Sometimes we are asked why not everything served in the cafeterias, especially the produce, can be organic? We do serve pockets of organic produce in the salad bars, mostly the lettuces. However, given the availability for our scope of service for organic, the cost and not to mention all the different kinds of labels that exist for organic and what it really means, this choice does not tick many focus points at present in Thailand.
Our menus are in constant creation and always a work in progress, just as food, agriculture and food science is around the world. We take pride in our ongoing considerations of all points above, especially being part of an educational institution which is looking to create a sustainable and better world. We look forward to touching upon more of this in following bulletins. Enjoy.
(Kindly note that all food pictures accompanying the bulletins are of actual cafeteria fare).
