Board of Trustees Annual Election, 2018
By: Dr. Henrietta Bullinger, Board of Trustees
bullingerh@yahoo.com
The ISB Board of Trustees would like to announce its annual election, which will take place on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, the day of the International School Association (ISA) Annual General Meeting. (The ISA is comprised of all ISB parents and guardians and is the license holder of ISB.) Election results will be announced that evening at the 7:00 pm AGM. Board nominations open on Friday, March 16 and close on Friday, April 12.
The ISB Board of Trustees is currently composed of eleven elected positions and up to four appointed positions. This year there will be three open seats on the Board to be filled by election. Newly elected trustees will serve a two-year term, beginning August 1, 2018.
Candidates for the Board of Trustees (BOT) should be aware of the many rewards and responsibilities of serving on the Board. The Board is the guardian of the school’s mission, and as such sets policy, focuses on school governance and addresses long-term, strategic issues. The Board is not involved in day-to-day school management. The full Board meets once a month in an open regular session, followed by a closed executive session. Board meetings occur in the evenings at ISB and last approximately two-three hours. In addition, trustees attend an annual retreat in August.
Trustees also serve on one or more committees corresponding to their skills and interests. Current committees are the Business Committee, the Committee on Trustees, and the Strategic Improvement and Learning Committee. Committees meet once a month for one-two hours and are the working groups of the Board. Subjects such as financial stability, budget oversight, stewardship of ISB’s educational program, evaluation and training of the Board, and future strategic improvements in alignment with the mission of ISB, are examples of issues addressed by the committees.
Trustees are charged with the responsibility to represent ISB and the ISA as a whole, rather than any one constituency within the community. No specific professional or personal background is needed, other than ISA membership, a positive attitude, the ability to commit to the time requirements, and a deep interest to maintain and further enhance the excellence of ISB. The rewards of Board service include the opportunity to interact with our dynamic school leadership team, and the opportunity to understand and help shape ISB’s future growth and direction.
Please note these important election dates and activities:

Please complete the re-enrollment form for 2018-2019
By: ISB Admissions Team
admissions@isb.ac.th
Dear ISB Parent/Guardian,
It is that time of year again when we need to ask you to please confirm the enrollment of your child/children for the next school year. This re-enrollment process is important for us to be able to make accurate assessments of our enrollment for the 2018/19 school year. We sincerely hope that your family will be returning to ISB.
Our parents are the foundation of our school and it is with your trust and support that we can continue to serve the needs of all our learners.
In order to inform us of your intention to stay at or leave ISB next year, please login to your Powerschool account and choose the ‘Re-enrollment’ button on the left-hand side. Should you not be in a situation to confirm your child/children’s enrollment at this time, we still request that you register through Powerschool as “not sure” and inform us of your reason. Seats will become limited at certain grade levels, therefore we urge you to stay in regular contact to ensure a seat is saved for your child/children.
PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR RE-ENROLLMENT INTENTION ON OR BEFORE FRIDAY, 16th MARCH, 2018.
AMIS MS Honor Choir Housing April 4-8, 2018
By: Anthony Giles, PK-12 Arts & Activities Director
anthonyg@isb.ac.th
Dear ISB Students and Parents,
Apologies if you are receiving this information again but we are desperate to find housing for our 192 guests! As you may or may not be aware, ISB will be hosting the 2018
AMIS MS Boys’ and Girls’ Honor Choirs April 4-8, 2018.
With 213 students (including 20 from ISB) from 17 schools around the region participating in the conference this year I am writing to ask for your help housing our visiting student delegates. Think of it as an opportunity to connect with students at other schools who may host students from ISB in the future. Or, think of it as an opportunity to give back if your family has already benefited from similar arrangements at other schools.
AMIS conferences and tournaments depend upon the good will and generosity of people like you to host visiting students from other schools. This reciprocal agreement shared throughout the region adds immense value to our programs, and provides a unique opportunity to develop new friendships, share in culture, and strengthen our connections across international communities. Honestly, it’s one of the things that makes AMIS events so special.
So, show off your new guest room. Share your favorite dessert. Get to know students from other schools. In short, be a part of this rich AMIS hosting tradition by registering HERE on or before Wednesday, March 21, 2018.
The gift of Blood is the gift of Life!
By: Sally Plomley, Nurse Office
sallyp@isb.ac.th
Blood donations….All Blood Types Required!
The Thailand Red Cross never has enough blood. To help with this we have organized the donation center to come to ISB on March 27 to collect blood from willing donors. This year our blood drive is called the “Khun Wut Blood Drive” to honor Khun Wut one of the ISB B&G staff members who has donated blood over 100 times. Blood that is donated will be used by the Red Cross for potentially life saving blood, plasma and platelet transfusions.
Sterile techniques are used for blood donations and all blood is screened for infectious diseases after it is donated. All potential donors should be fit and healthy on the day of donation and will need to fill in a questionnaire prior to donation (please see donation guidelines below to see if you are ok to donate). Donors should be 17-55 years old and will be reviewed by the donation team to ensure they are ok to donate (this includes a check of their hemoglobin prior to donation). Questionnaire forms are available to pick up from the ISB Health Clinic if you would like to fill them out before the day to save you time when you donate. Potential donors should ensure they are well rested, well hydrated and have a low fat breakfast/lunch prior to donating.

Cafeteria News… Did You Know about Yellow Mango Mania?
By: ISB Cafeteria (Michelle) , Cafeteria Manager
cafeteria@isb.ac.th
The most awaited feature ‘Smoothie of the Month’ has arrived! Welcome Back to Yellow Mango Madness!
There are actually some blessings that come along as the hot season commences. One of the best is the naturally ripe, sweet fruit we can savor at this time such as the ‘King of Fruits’, the yellow mango. We’re whipping up fresh Mango smoothies such as our Mango Madness, Mango Strawberry Kiss and Mango Blueberry Bang along with Mango with Sticky Rice at the Grind Cafe. The health benefits of Mango are so numerous, this blurb is not able to do them fair justice. However, to mention a few: Mangoes are rich in antioxidants and alkalizing properties which help combat cancer causing agents and inflammation, contain high levels of fiber and vitamin C which lower cholesterol and boost the immune system, and are high in vitamin A which improves vision. If that is not yet enough, add any one of our Superfoods which add Protein, Omegas, Iron, Fiber, Phytonutrients, and Beta Carotene depending which you prefer. Choices include homemade Cricket Powder, Organic Ground Flax, Organic Chia Seeds and Spirulina creating the ultimate health boost, all in one cup! Welcome Back Mango Mania. Enjoy.
Rabies…Consider Vaccination
By: ISB Health Clinic
nurse@isb.ac.th
Rabies is a fatal disease which is preventable with appropriate vaccination and treatment after a bite or scratch from an infected animal.
According to newspaper reports there have been 4 people die from rabies so far this year in Thailand and officials have noted an increase infection rate amongst dogs. It is estimated that 30-40% of street dogs are infected with rabies. At the moment there is a mass immunisation program to immunise street dogs for rabies.
Rabies is caused by a virus which affects the nervous system.
There are about 55 000 rabies-related deaths worldwide each year. Bites from unvaccinated dogs cause most of these cases.
Once rabies is diagnosed survival is rare (only 2 reported cases of survival in people with no pre/post rabies exposure care). There is no specific treatment for rabies.
Rabies is spread by contact with the saliva of an animal infected by rabies. This could be due to a bite or even just a scratch from an infected animal. Once infected the onset of symptoms is usually 1-3 months but may be less than a week to more than a year.
Animals with rabies may be infectious for several weeks before symptoms appear and remain infectious until after they have died.
Symptoms:
- Initially “flu-like” symptoms: general weakness, fever or headache which may last for days
- Pain or an unusual or unexplained tingling, pricking or burning sensation (paraesthesia) at the wound site
- “Furious” form (70-80% cases) will have hyperactivity, excited behaviour, confusion, fear of water and fresh air. Death occurs within a few days
- “Paralytic” form (20-30% cases) will have gradual paralysis starting at the site of the bite/scratch and gradually spreading to involve the whole body, coma and death
Diagnosis:
There are no easy diagnostic tests for rabies and it is usually diagnosed on symptoms and after death.
Treatment:
There is no effective treatment currently available for people who have developed signs and symptoms of rabies. Survival is very unlikely even with advanced medical care.
Prevention:
- Pre-Exposure:
- Do not attempt to handle wild/unknown animals
- Vaccination:
- Pre-exposure vaccination is advised for travellers to many parts of the world especially if at risk of exposure to animals (such as travelling in rural areas). Parents should consider vaccinating their children as they are more likely to handle such animals and may not tell their parents if they get a scratch. It is also advised for people who will be living in an area where there is rabies (such as Thailand).
- The schedule is 3 doses of the vaccine given on Day 0, Day 7 and Day 21-28
- Side effects include redness and swelling at vaccine site, low grade fever, headache and lethargy.
- Post-Exposure:
- Wash the wound well with soap and water for at least 5 minutes
- Apply an antiseptic solution such as povidone-iodine or alcohol
- Seek immediate medical attention
- If given soon enough after exposure (as soon as possible), rabies immunoglobulin (a solution containing human antibodies specific for rabies that is made from blood products) and rabies vaccine (4 doses on Day 0, Day 3, Day 7 and Day 14) can prevent development of infection. However, once symptoms develop, these infections are almost always fatal.
- Booster rabies vaccination is also required post exposure with 2 doses of vaccine (at Day 0 and Day 3) in people who have had pre-exposure vaccine. No rabies immunoglobulin is required.
- In some remote areas rabies immunoglobulin may not be available and thus individuals who have not had pre-exposure vaccination will be at increased risk of developing rabies.
