‘Impromptu’
Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents,

We welcomed our travelling IASAS Cultural Convention participants back to school on Monday after a successful and fulfilling few days of intensive practice, rehearsal, displays, workshops, performance and debate. Although in most cases there are no ‘winners’ for the Cultural Convention there are medals awarded in Forensics and Debate competitions. This year I am pleased to announce that senior Colin Vanelli was the winner of two gold medals for his final speeches in the Impromptu speech and Extemporaneous divisions. A number of our other students made it through to the final round for forensics and debate but Colin was simply superb in his efforts and his delivery. Congratulations to Colin and to all of our other Cultural Convention performers (and their coaches and supervisors) for a wonderful weekend of Culture.

Regards
Justin Alexander

Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences: (repeat)
Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences will be held from 7:30 – 2:30 pm (Lunch -11:15- 12:00 pm) on Friday March 16th in Rajendra Hall.  This will be an important time to discuss the semester two progress of your child(ren) with teachers and counselors.

The conferences in March are a great opportunity for students and parents to speak with their teachers about course selections for the following school year. This is particularly important for students moving from Grade 10 to 11 as they have to make a greater number of decisions.

With this in mind it is strongly recommend that both parents and students attend the conferences together and come with two outcomes in mind, current progress and future course choices. Please be aware that if you have a choice in the time you attend, the afternoon session from 12:00 – 14:30 is generally less busy than the morning session.

Parents are invited to attend the HS Principal Forum lead by Mr. Alexander and the Administrative Team. Questions raised by parents regarding assessments, curriculum, counseling and some others will be addressed! The HS administration is always very eager to understand the concerns of the HS parents, and the Principal’s Forum is a great tool in maintaining open communication between HS parents and the HS administration. So mark you calendars and don’t miss this opportunity!

College Counselors

ALL HIGH SCHOOL

Summer Enrichment Programs – It’s that time of year when families are starting to think about their summer plans. It’s an ideal time for students to do things they normally cannot do during the school year: travel, spend time with family, cultivate an interest in a new field, pursue volunteer opportunities, or attend summer programs. When it comes to admissions to colleges and universities, participating in summer programs is not a requirement or expectation. Any institution wants to know what a student is curious about, what motivates them, and are they willing to seek out those interests. For students who are interested in a structured summer enrichment program, ISB has a great database of opportunities that can be accessed here. Search based on the subject or the location. Do note that many have application deadlines in March.

If a student would like to apply to a summer program, they should schedule a time with their school or college counselor to discuss the application requirements and deadlines. Students should complete a form in our office giving us more information about the program so that we can best support the student in their application. Recommendations and official transcripts can only be sent directly to an institution.

COLLEGE COUNSELING
It’s Time to Schedule the Student Led Junior Conference
These meeting started in February and are ongoing through March, 11th grade students and their parents will be meeting with college counselors to start planning for life after graduation. Parents or students can schedule this meeting for approximately 1 hour. We prefer that both parents attend this meeting. The Junior Assignment (University Research, Resume, Parent Perspectives and Power Point) needs to be completed before this meeting can be scheduled.

Grade 10 Course Selection – In March, 10th grade students will be choosing their courses for next year. To help students make the most informed decisions, teachers will be discussing options in class and College and School Counselors are available for any questions.

Monthly College Coffees – The next parent coffee focusing on college is on March 19 from 12:30 – 2:00 and is targeted for our Korean parent community. Our Korean liaison will be available serve as a translator.

Grade 10 College Night – On May 3 College Counselors will host a Grade 10 College Night for students and parents.  This session will introduce the College Counselors and their role during Grade 11 and 12 in the University process.  Standardized testing will also be discussed.  More information to come.

University Visits– for a full list of who is coming, please subscribe to the Google Calendar at this link.  a full list of who is coming, please subscribe to the Google Calendar at this link.

School Counselor:
Kevin Callahan
kevinc@isb.ac.th

If you apply to summer programs or are moving at the end of the year and applying to other schools, please complete the document request form linked here and turn in to the HS Counseling office at least 3 days in advance if any documents are needed to support the student’s application.

All grade 10 students by next Tuesday will have met with their assigned college counselor to introduce themselves and look at their possible course selections for grades 11 and 12.  Now they have two counselors!

Next Monday, 12 March, all grade 9 students will meet with one of the school counselors to discuss course options for next school year. Course registration will run March 14-20, please be reminded that sign ups are not first come first served, so registering any time within that time frame is fine.  There will also be a good opportunity at teacher conferences next week to speak with both teachers and counselors about future courses.  We’ll see you at the Parent – Teacher Conference on Friday, March 16th.
