GCW Wrap Up!
Andy Vaughan
andyv@isb.ac.th

After countless hours of planning by teachers, support staff and the companies we partner with throughout GCW, the week is wrapping up for all our High School Students. The first of our overnight trips arrived back into Bangkok last night and the last will land late Saturday night. Our hope is that each of our students will return with new memories that will help them reflect on the different cultures and experiences that they were exposed to, whether it be as close as teaching in a classroom setting at the local Wat Koo school, or experiencing the cultural uniqueness of a small village in Sumatra, the experiences our High School Students have encountered are incredibly rich and varied.

On 6 March each GCW group will meet for the final time and reflect on their trip. Students will hand in their reflections during or prior to this final GCW meeting; please encourage your child to complete this over the next week or two while this experience is fresh in their minds. Over the coming days, please also take the time to discuss the challenges and the highlights from the week that your child has experienced.

Our goal is that there remains a common theme of developing an appreciation of the cultural and environmental richness of our world. Some of our trips are heavy on the service aspect while others build on developing a cultural understanding and environmental appreciation of the destinations each course visits. Our students have interacted with other students whom they may not have known prior to this trip and have been led by teachers whose class they may not have been in; we value these different experiences that our students gain while away from the typical school setting.

At this time I want to thank each of the teachers for extra work that is put in to make this week a success, if you get the chance in the coming week, please do send your child’s GCW teachers a quick email as these go a long way.

Finally, this year we are looking at reviewing the greater purposes of GCW and as part of this we will be sending a survey out in the coming weeks to gather your opinions of how we can develop and improve the program. We look forward to your input into this process.

IASAS MUSIC CC Showcase – Feb. 21 & 22 (3:00pm MS Choir Room)
Anthony Giles
anthonyg@isb.ac.th

Selected delegates from the high school vocal, piano, strings and band areas will be performing their individual solos and ensemble selections on these two days, beginning at 3:00 pm on Feb 21 & 22 in the MS Choir Room.  These performances give our delegates a chance to perform for an ISB audience, and also serves as a warmup to their adjudicated performances that will happen at Taipei in early March. Audience members may come and go between performers as necessary, and a program will be provided as to what day and order delegates will be performing. Come enjoy the incredible talent and skill of our ISB Music Delegates, who have all been working for several months on high quality music preparing for these performances!

AMIS MS Honor Choir Housing April 4-8, 2018
Anthony Giles
anthonyg@isb.ac.th

Dear ISB Parents and Students,

As you may or may not be aware, ISB will be hosting the 2018

AMIS MS Boys’ and Girls’ Honor Choirs April 4-8, 2018.

With over 200 students from 17 schools around the region participating in the conference this year I am writing to ask for your help housing visiting student delegates. Think of it as an opportunity to connect with students at other schools who may host students from ISB in the future. Or, think of it as an opportunity to give back if your family has already benefited from similar arrangements at other schools.

AMIS conferences and tournaments depend upon the good will and generosity of people like you to host visiting students from other schools. This reciprocal agreement shared throughout the region adds immense value to our programs, and provides a unique opportunity to develop new friendships, share in culture, and strengthen our connections across international communities. Honestly, it’s one of the things that makes AMIS events so special.

So, show off your new guest room. Share your favorite dessert. Get to know students from other schools. In short, be a part of this rich AMIS hosting tradition by registering HERE on or before Wednesday, February 28, 2018

Please Note:

All ISB music students are strongly encouraged to submit the housing form linked above especially those who have participated in AMIS this year or in years past.
Things to consider…

  • Host families are responsible for providing a safe environment for visiting students in compliance with the ISB Hosting Policy (see attached).
  • Student guests must be hosted in pairs, or more, with no exceptions.
  • Accommodation can be fairly basic and rooms shared.
  • At least one parent/guardian must be present at home for the duration of the convention. Evening supervision is required.
  • Visiting participants will arrive Wednesday, April 4, 2018.
  • All visiting teams will depart on or before Sunday, April 8, 2018.
  • Host families are expected to provide healthy breakfasts and dinners for visiting students.
  • All participants and host students must follow the IASAS Rules and Guidelines (see attached) set forth by the league and host school.
  • Parents will receive a curfew call from visiting coaches at 9pmevery evening to check in with their students.

Regards,
Anthony Giles

Avery Udagawa
averyu@isb.ac.th

On Wednesday, Feb. 21, and throughout the week of Feb. 18-24, ISB is celebrating International Mother Language Day. The purpose of IMLD is to promote linguistic diversity and multilingualism. Teachers throughout the school have looked at ways to explore and affirm our students’ native languages. Here is a poster with together in the languages represented on ISB’s student body—about 40! Test yourself: how many can you identify? Happy International Mother Language Day!
