By: Shelley Bragg, Director of Marketing and Communication
shelleyb@isb.ac.th

Alex Face has become well known internationally for his graffiti art found across Bangkok. His famous character, who has a child-like face and is dressed in animal costumes, can be seen on buildings and in alleys throughout the city and Alex uses this and his other work as a social commentary.  You can read more about him here and about his work here.

We are honoured that Alex will visit ISB on November 15th to work with our students and create a collaborative community art piece. Everyone is welcome to come and see Alex in action.

HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE:
  • Spray background on the panels Alex will use for his work on the 15th during lunch on Monday and Tuesday, November 13 and 14 – path between the cafeteria & Field D
  • Come and watch Alex work from 12.30 – 2.30pm on the 15th. Alex will be working in the outdoor seating area behind the main cafeteria, near Field D.

Need volunteers for Graffiti mural painting November 13-15

By: Rachel and Kelly
rhlandolt@gmail.com

Booster Club has paired with the Art Department at ISB to create the Friends of the Arts program, a program that supports the various visual art departments within ISB and celebrates artists and students as they find passion through art!

Graffiti artist Alex Face will be coming to the school on Wednesday, November 15th to create a few amazing spray-paint pieces and do a presentation.

To prepare for his visit we will be hosting a Free-Paint on Monday, November 13th and Tuesday November 14th. All community members, ISB Staff, teachers, students, and all parents can come to the green behind the MS/HS Cafeteria where we will have paint and panels all waiting to be covered with creativity! We invite everyone to come and make their mark on mural panels that will be installed at ISB to commemorate this event for years to come!
On Wednesday, November 15th, we invite everyone to come to Alex Face’s presentation between 10:35 – 11:30 AM in the MPB. After, all community members are invited to watch Alex as he creates new pieces for our school at 12:30 – 2:30 in the green behind the MS/HS Cafeteria.

This will be a big event that will require more than just a few volunteers – We are needing at least 13 people for Monday, as well as Tuesday to help the kid’s and community members paint on the boards, and 4 people to help with crowd control and chaperoning Alex Face on Wednesday.

Please sign up HERE and support the Arts program at our school! For questions about this volunteer opportunity please contact Kelly Mott or Rachel Landolt.  For more information on the artist and his work please contact the ISB art department.

Happy painting,
Rachel and Kelly

Last chance to register for Community baseball/softball for 2017-18 season- Nov. 10th

Bangkok Baseball Softball Association (BBSA) has organized baseball/softball play for the past 57 years in Bangkok. There are leagues for boys and girls ages 4 yrs – 18 yrs.  Please note registration is open from now until November 10th.  We must register players now so we have time to hold player assessments, form teams and order player uniforms before play begins.  Current fees per player are THB 3,600.  Registration fees will increase to THB 4,100 on November 11th so be sure to register before that date.

You can make your payment at the Community Activity Office (CAO) or pay by Thai bank wire transfer.  Cash, credit cards and Thai baht checks are accepted for payment at the CAO office.  The CAO Office is open MondayFriday, 7:00AM to 11:00AM and 12:00PM to 3:00PM.

Player assessment will be held on Sunday November 12th at the ISB fields, except for Boys AAA league which will be held on Monday, November 13th.  All players are strongly encouraged to attend their assessment sessions to allow the coaches to create fair and balanced teams.   See the attached assessment schedule.

Opening Day for baseball/softball is on Saturday, Nov 25th.  All games are played on Friday evenings and Saturdays at ISB.  Games will continue every weekend until the league championships the weekend of February 23rd/24th.  There will be no games during the winter break at ISB but we will continue play on Saturday, January 6th 2018.  The game schedule will be published once we know how many players are registered.

Practices will begin the week of Nov 13th.  See the attached practice schedule.   All teams will practice once per week during the season as a weekly practice is important to skills development and to learn the fundamentals of teamwork, etc.  We have arranged a downtown Bangkok location for an optional Friday practice at NIST.  Parents will have to pay THB 1000 for the season for this practice as NIST charges for field usage.

On the registration form you will also have an opportunity to volunteer to be a coach, assistant coach or team parent.  Please consider helping out with your child’s team in some way.  The kids really love having their parents helping out with their team and you will have a great time.  No previous baseball experience is necessary.

BBSA has purchased a limited number of fielding gloves for players who need them.  These will be sold on our assessment day.

Please go to www.isb.ac.th/community-baseball for more information and the register link. Please visit our Facebook page at facebook.com/groups/217724271623929/.  If you have any questions, please contact Kevin Sypolt at ksypolt@gmail.com.

Water Safety

By: ISB Health Clinic
nurse@isb.ac.th

In Thailand there are many water hazards we need to be careful about, including beaches, swimming pools, rivers, klongs, lakes, swamps and water parks. Every year we should review water safety and what we can do to prevent injuries and fatalities.

General Guidelines:

  • Never swim alone and always have adult supervision when children are swimming
  • Always know the depth of the water you are entering. Especially if you are diving
  • Always stay at a safe depth for your swimming ability
  • Use age/ability appropriate flotation devices if required but remember that these are not life saving devices and do not replace close adult supervision
  • Avoid swimming for 30 minutes following a meal. Do not eat or chew gum when swimming (due to the risk of choking)
  • Avoid repeated prolonged underwater swimming. This is to decrease the chance of Shallow Water Blackout. This is a problem that tends to occur in competent swimmers trying to improve performance, children trying to swim laps under water and in spearfishermen and freedivers
  • If possible swim where there is a lifeguard on duty. Be aware that lifeguards at pools may not manage behavior and be as vigilant as lifeguards in other countries. A lifeguard is not a substitute for close adult supervision
  • As a supervising adult consider doing a CPR course
  • Never swim in the dark
  • Never swim if you have been consuming alcohol or any other drug that may affect your concentration
  • Never swim when there is thunder or lightening in the area
  • Ensure you and your child can swim. Get swim lessons if required
  • Be aware of the risk of sunburn and heat strokes. Make sure you use sunscreen and rash guards and drink plenty of water.

Swimming Pools:

  • If possible enclose pool with fences and self closing gates
  • Never run around pools
  • Never push someone into a pool and ensure when jumping in there is nobody close by
  • Consider wearing goggles as some pools may not be as clean as they should be.

Lakes/Rivers/Ponds:

  • Make sure you know the currents in the water you are swimming in
  • If possible ensure the waterways are clean and free of toxins or certain bacteria or amoeba
  • Consider the use of water shoes to protect feet from sharp rocks and broken glass
  • Be aware of potential snags at the bottom of rivers and if caught pull leg slowly out (do not pull quickly as the increases the risk of getting caught)
  • If on boats always wear life jackets.

Beaches:

  • Be aware of currents and rips. Ensure all swimmers know what to do if caught in rip (swim diagonally out with the rip…..never swim against it)
  • Understand flags on beach
    • Red and yellow flag: lifeguard on duty. Swim between the flags
    • Black and white flag: Surfboard and other water craft zone between flags. Do not swim here
    • Green flag: Low hazard. Calm conditions
    • Yellow flag: Medium hazard. Be cautious. Moderate surf and/or currents
    • Red flag: High Hazard. Unsafe. Do not enter the water
  • Always face to waves…..do not stand with your back to them
  • Be aware of jellyfish and other dangerous sea life that may be in the water. Either carry vinegar with you or know where you can access a “Vinegar Station” (on  some beaches in Thailand) to help treat jellyfish stings
  • Do not swim near piers as the currents may be unpredictable and at risk of being hit by boats etc.

Waterparks:

  • Always read safety instructions and follow them. Follow instructions of staff
  • Wear a life jacket if not a strong swimmer
  • Always wear a helmet if required to.

ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related. Please follow the above safety precautions to reduce water related health and saftey risks. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or the ISB Health Clinic (nurse@isb.ac.th).
