Important Information: Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in Bangkok

Dear Parents,

We have been informed by the Thai Ministry of Public Health that there have been several cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in Bangkok.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease is a common childhood viral disease which cases fevers and blisters to form on the hands, feet and in the mouth (as well as other parts of the body). It is generally a mild illness but there can be complications with inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) which can be fatal. There are several different viruses that can cause this inflection so you can get it more than once. We have been told that the viral that is circulating at the moment is more likely to cause encephalitis than other strains. Additional information on Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease is available on this link

At the moment we have NOT had any reported cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth at ISB. We want parents to be aware that there have been cases in the wider community and they should keep their child at home if they are unwell and take them to the doctor.

If we get any cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth in a class we will immediately notify parents and start screening student by checking their temperature and looking at their hands, feet and mouth for blisters on a daily basis. The classroom will get a “deep clean” on a daily basis which means all surfaces (including pencils, scissors etc) are cleaned.

If we get more than 3 cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in a class we are required to close the class for 1 week (this is due to Thai Public Health Regulations).

At all times we encourage parents to ensure their child is eating a healthy diet and getting enough sleep at night as these have been shown to help the immune system fight infections.

To help prevent outbreaks of infections in school we ask all parents to keep their child at home if they are unwell. If they get diagnosed with an infectious disease please notify the school immediately (nurse@isb.ac.th). Any student who has been diagnosed with an infectious disease must present a medical certificate to the clinic stating they are fit to return to school and no longer contagious.

ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or the ISB Health Clinic (nurse@isb.ac.th).

Alex Face, famous Thai graffiti artist, at ISB – November 15th

By: Shelley Bragg, Director of Marketing and Communication
shelleyb@isb.ac.th

Alex Face has become well known internationally for his graffiti art found across Bangkok. His famous character, who has a child-like face and is dressed in animal costumes, can be seen on buildings and in alleys throughout the city and Alex uses this and his other work as a social commentary.  You can read more about him here and about his work here.

We are honoured that Alex will visit ISB on November 15th to work with our students and create a collaborative community art piece. Everyone is welcome to come and see Alex in action. From 12.15 – 2.15pm that day, Alex will be working in the outdoor seating area behind the main cafeteria, near Field D. Please come through and watch his work take shape and have an opportunity to possibly meet this influential artist.

There will be a series of fun activities for the community leading up to November 15th, for which more information will follow after the October holidays.

ISB Health Clinic: Medical Certificates

By: ISB Health Clinic
nurse@isb.ac.th

To help us limit the spread of infectious diseases in the school we require any student who is diagnosed with a infectious disease (such as Hand, Foot and Mouth disease, Influenza, Chicken Pox, Salmonella etc) to notify the school as soon as possible (by email to their teacher and nurse@isb.ac.th). When they are better they need to present a medical certificate to the ISB Health Clinic PRIOR to going to class. This certificate must state the date the student is fit to return to school and will not be contagious to others in a normal school environment. When you take your child to see their doctor please make sure you get the certificate otherwise you may need to make another appointment. Students will be asked to come to the clinic if they have not handed in the certificate and may be sent home.

If your child has not been unwell enough to have needed to see a doctor or has not been diagnosed with a infectious disease a certificate is not required. Any student who has had a fever in the preceding 24 hours or has had fever reducing medication (for example ibuprofen or paracetamol/acetaminophen) should not come to school.

The reason we ask for this is that with certain infectious diseases you may still be able to infect others despite not having had a fever for the preceding 24 hours.

We appreciate all parents helping to minimise the risk of disease outbreaks in our school community.

ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or the ISB Health Clinic (nurse@isb.ac.th).

Last chance to register for Community baseball/softball for 2017-18 season

By: Kevin Sypolt
ksypolt@gmail.com.

Bangkok Baseball Softball Association (BBSA) has organized baseball/softball play for the past 57 years in Bangkok. There are leagues for boys and girls ages 4 yrs – 18 yrs.  Please note registration is open from now until November 10th.  We must register players now so we have time to hold player assessments, form teams and order player uniforms before play begins.  Current fees per player are THB 3,600.  Registration fees will increase to THB 4,100 on November 11th so be sure to register before that date.

You can make your payment at the Community Activity Office (CAO) or pay by Thai bank wire transfer.  Cash, credit cards and Thai baht checks are accepted for payment at the CAO office.  The CAO Office is open MondayFriday, 7:00AM to 11:00AM and 12:00PM to 3:00PM.

Player assessment will be held on Sunday November 12th at the ISB fields, except for Boys AAA league which will be held on Monday, November 13th.  All players are strongly encouraged to attend their assessment sessions to allow the coaches to create fair and balanced teams.   See the attached assessment schedule.

Opening Day for baseball/softball is on Saturday, Nov 25th.  All games are played on Friday evenings and Saturdays at ISB.  Games will continue every weekend until the league championships the weekend of February 23rd/24th.  There will be no games during the winter break at ISB but we will continue play on Saturday, January 6th 2018.  The game schedule will be published once we know how many players are registered.

Practices will begin the week of Nov 13th.  See the attached practice schedule.   All teams will practice once per week during the season as a weekly practice is important to skills development and to learn the fundamentals of teamwork, etc.  We have arranged a downtown Bangkok location for an optional Friday practice.  Parents will have to pay THB 1000 for the season for this practice because of charges for field usage.

On the registration form you will also have an opportunity to volunteer to be a coach, assistant coach or team parent.  Please consider helpng out with your child’s team in some way.  The kids really love having their parents helping out with their team and you will have a great time.  No previous baseball experience is necessary.

BBSA has purchased a limited number of fielding gloves for players who need them.  These will be sold on our assessment day.

Please go to www.isb.ac.th/community-baseball for more information and the register link. Please visit our Facebook page at facebook.com/groups/217724271623929/.  If you have any questions, please contact Kevin Sypolt at ksypolt@gmail.com.
