School Counselors
During the past two weeks there has been an increase in the amount of assessments and deadlines for many of our students. The students have been using management and organization skills to tackle this. We do know though that some students need support during these times. This may be a need for academic support. Ideas we would recommend: seeking assistance from the teacher, seeking assistance from a peer, using our learning hub with support staff, dropping by the counseling office to seek out a peer tutor from the club / program we have. Students can also be in need of emotional support at these difficult times. We hope a supportive role can come from home, the school, and a student’s peers. Please know the school counselors are here to support. If you have concerns please encourage your son / daughter to reach out to us or feel free to contact us directly.
Tuesday October 10 – World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day (10 October) is a day for global mental health awareness and advocacy against social stigma. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.
According to the World Health Organization, worldwide 10-20% of children and adolescents experience mental disorders. Neuropsychiatric conditions are the leading cause of disability in young people in all regions. If untreated, these conditions severely influence children’s development, their educational attainments and their potential to live fulfilling and productive lives.
In the high school we educate the topic of Mental Health primarily in our Health class in Grade 10. We also have a session of focus in our Freshman Seminar. In conversations with students and families we hope to destigmatize this health issue. Just like another part of your body that is in pain or injured quite often seeking advice on how to treat the health concern can be the best way forward. The ISB Counselors are not therapists but between us we have supported thousands of students over the years with their mental health. We can also help with referrals / outside resources in the community for support.
