Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policy
By: Dr. Andrew Davies, Head of School
andrewd@isb.ac.th
Dear Parents,
Student Safeguarding is a significant priority at ISB and we have been working diligently over the past few years to ensure that the school is following best practices in this regard.
By enrolling your child at ISB, you agree to work in partnership with the school and abide by the policies adopted by the ISB Board of Trustees.
All of us at ISB want you to know that we genuinely value our partnership with you in providing for the safety and care of your children. It is for this reason that ISB has developed and adopted a Student Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct for ISB Employees and Associates. We have conducted recent training on the Student Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct in English and Thai for close to 800 ISB employees and associates including teachers, IAs, secretaries, Building and Grounds staff, security guards, substitute teachers, coaches, cafeteria staff, bus drivers and bus monitors.
Our ISB Student Safeguarding Policy outlines the measures we take to create a safe and nurturing environment for all of the children we come into contact with in our work, as well as the procedures we use to ensure that we fulfill our professional and ethical obligation to identify children who are in need of help and protection and to take appropriate action to ensure their wellbeing. We have translated this policy into Thai, Japanese and Korean, the major language groups of our community, in addition to English.
The ISB Code of Conduct applies to all ISB employees and Associates. It defines the standards by which all ISB students should be treated with respect and dignity at all times.
You can find the ISB Student Safeguarding Policy (English, Thai, Japanese and Korean) as well as the Code of Conduct on the Parent Portal and attached to this message.
Any member of our community who is concerned that a child or young person may be experiencing abuse or neglect should immediately notify a counselor, school psychologist or principal.
If you are concerned that an ISB employee or associate has violated our Code of Conduct, you should immediately notify the principal or Head of School.
We will work together with you to ensure that our children are safe and are knowledgeable about their rights and responsibilities to themselves and to each other so that they can grow and learn free of fear in a safe and supportive environment.
I thank you for your support of our efforts and invite you to contact your school counselor or principal regarding any specific questions you may have in this regard.
Sincerely,
Dr. Andrew Davies
Head of School

ISB Health Clinic: The gift of Blood is the gift of Life!
By: Sally Plomley
sallyp@isb.ac.th
Blood donations….All Blood Types Required!
The Thailand Red Cross never has enough blood. To help with this we have organized the donation center to come to ISB on October 17 to collect blood from willing donors. This year our blood drive is called the “Somkiat Blood Drive” to honor Khun Somkiat, one of the ISB security guards who has donated blood over 100 times. Blood that is donated will be used by the Red Cross for potentially life saving blood, plasma and platelet transfusions.
Sterile techniques are used for blood donations and all blood is screened for infectious diseases after it is donated. All potential donors should be fit and healthy on the day of donation and will need to fill in a questionnaire prior to donation (please see donation guidelines below to see if you are ok to donate). Donors should be 17-55 years old and will be reviewed by the donation team to ensure they are ok to donate (this includes a check of their hemoglobin prior to donation). Questionnaire forms are available to pick up from the ISB Health Clinic if you would like to fill them out before the day to save you time when you donate. Potential donors should ensure they are well rested, well hydrated and have a low fat breakfast/lunch prior to donating.
If you are willing to donate (and meet the criteria below) please sign up through Signup Genius (Blood donation sign up) or at the ISB Health Clinic. We ask potential donors to nominate a time (30 minute time slot) they would be able to donate so we can limit waiting times and ensure the Red Cross have enough staff to cope with donor numbers. Donation times are 9am-12pm and 1-3pm.
Negative Blood Group Database:
At times the Red Cross is in desperate need of Rh negative blood as not many Thais are Rh negative. Those with negative blood can also provide contact details so they can join a database and be contacted to see if they are willing to donate when this blood type is urgently required.
Registration for the Stem Cell Donor Database:
When you donate you may also want to sign up to be on the stem cell donor register. Stem cells are used in the treatment of certain cancer and other medical conditions. Information will be provided on the day about being a stem cell donor.
Thailand Red Cross Donation Criteria
The Red Cross defines an acceptable donor as one whom:
- Is between the ages of 17-55.
- Weighs at least 45 kg (99 lbs).
Donating is not advised if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Gave birth or had a miscarriage in the past six months.
- Had diarrhea in the past seven days.
- Had dental treatment in the past three days.
- Had major surgery in the past six months or minor surgery in the past seven days.
- Have a history of drug use or been imprisoned in the past three years.
- Received a blood transfusion in the past year.
- Visited any area where malaria is endemic in the past year or actually had malaria in the past three years.
- Resided in the UK for more than 6 months during the period 1986-1999.
- Have taken any medication other than Paracetamol/acetaminophen.
- Have tested positive for hepatitis B or C in the past.
- Have asthma, epilepsy, chronic skin disease, chronic cough, tuberculosis, allergies, high blood pressure, heart/kidney/thyroid disease, cancer, bleeding disorder, etc.
- Have had ear/body piercings, tattoos made or removed, or acupuncture in the past year.
- Have received any vaccinations in the past two months except seasonal Flu vaccine.
- Have received a serum injection in the past year.
Before donating blood you should:
- Get enough sleep (at least six hours).
- Drink at least 3-4 cups of pure water to prepare your system and avoid getting dizzy.
- Do not consume alcohol in the 24 hours prior to donating.
- Eat something healthy that is low in fat. No high fat foods for 6 hours preceding donation.

Cafeteria News…Did You Know…?
Approximately 98% of what we serve in the Cafeterias across campus are home baked, hand cut, hand grate, home cooked, and hand prepared by us every morning. This includes all the items at The Grind, the hamburger buns for BBQ Friday, the baguette bread for the sandwiches, the wonton pockets in ES, the homemade Chicken & Vegetable Stock for all the Soups, the Pineapple Juice for our Punch, and the Home Roasted meats for our sandwich bar. We believe that Basic is Best. Food in its basic form carries the most amount of nutrients for our bodies and is optimally digested, hence allowing us the maximum benefits from the foods we eat. Epicure Catering welcomes a fresh delivery of produce and meats daily, striving to use recipes with only the most natural ingredients.
Note that our MS/HS Cafeteria is open for parents to enjoy and that we start our everyday with homemade breakfast serving at 6:30am – 9:30am. Lunch is served from 9:45am – 13:00pm, and afternoon snacks at the Grind from 12:30- 17:00pm.
Coming to school on Saturday Oct 7th? Our Cafeteria will be open for lunch from 10am-1:00pm to celebrate BICF and the IB Theatre and Performance Symposium. Enjoy.
BBSA – Baseball and softball registration is now open for the 2017-18 season
By: Kevin Sypolt
ksypolt@gmail.com
Bangkok Baseball Softball Association (BBSA) has organized baseball/softball play for the past 57 years in Bangkok. There are leagues for boys and girls ages 4 yrs – 18 yrs. Please note registration is open from now until November 10th. We must register players now so we have time to hold player assessments, form teams and order player uniforms before play begins. Current fees per player are THB 3,600. Registration fees will increase to THB 4,100 on November 11th so be sure to register before that date.
You can make your payment at the Community Activity Office (CAO) or pay by Thai bank wire transfer. Cash, credit cards and Thai baht checks are accepted for payment at the CAO office. The CAO Office is open Monday – Friday, 7:00AM to 11:00AM and 12:00PM to 3:00PM.
Player assessment will be held on Sunday November 12th at the ISB fields, except for Boys AAA league which will be held on Monday, November 13th. All players are strongly encouraged to attend their assessment sessions to allow the coaches to create fair and balanced teams. See the attached assessment schedule.
Opening Day for baseball/softball is on Saturday, Nov 25th. All games are played on Friday evenings and Saturdays at ISB. Games will continue every weekend until the league championships the weekend of February 23rd/24th. There will be no games during the winter break at ISB but we will continue play on Saturday, January 6th 2018. The game schedule will be published once we know how many players are registered.
Practices will begin the week of Nov 13th. See the attached practice schedule. All teams will practice once per week during the season as a weekly practice is important to skills development and to learn the fundamentals of teamwork, etc. We have arranged a downtown Bangkok location for an optional Friday practice at a downtown venue. Parents will have to pay THB 1000 for the season for this practice because of charges for field usage.
On the registration form you will also have an opportunity to volunteer to be a coach, assistant coach or team parent. Please consider helpng out with your child’s team in some way. The kids really love having their parents helping out with their team and you will have a great time. No previous baseball experience is necessary.
BBSA has purchased a limited number of fielding gloves for players who need them. These will be sold on our assessment day.
